178,000 miles....too much?

I have a guy ready to sell me a 95 Z28 M6 for $1500. The only thing that kinda scares me is the miles, 178k. I'm really not planning on doing much mods beyond exhaust, intake. Should I be scared with all those miles? As far as I know he took good care of it and those miles are mostly highway miles. It has the normal LT1 problems, leaky intake and needs and the optispark. How far have these engines gone before? If this was a 3800 V6 i wouldn't have to ask sinse my 98 bonneville has 250k and runs perfect, but I'm new the LT1's.

As far as you know it could have been taken care of like sh*t and all those miles are from the track =) If the engine is in crapcondition you'll need to figure in new o2s, plugs, wires, opti, other misc tune up stuff, a new tranny soon, and all the other leaks and what not, you'll prolly end up paying closer to 4k for this car (unless you do all your work yourself) before you can start any of the mods.

Re: 178,000 miles....too much?

If you search the site, you'll find posts about high milage LT1's. Some with well over 200k miles... If the car isn't modified and it hasn't been driven too hard, there's no reason to think that the motor is about to blow up... $1500 sounds cheap, so you should assume that there are some problems and you'll run into stuff that just needs to be replaced due to wear... Virtually nothing is cheap to repair on a LT1 fbody...

Have a mechanic check it out before you buy.

Good luck,

Worth it if the T56 is in working order. Hell the motor could be knocking and it still would be worth it. PM me the info if you pass it up!

Tranny seems to be working fine, I drove it around town yesterday for a bit, never made it out of 3rd though.

$1500 sounds like a cheap price to me. I'd buy it if presented with the opportunity.

$1500? buy it. You will build a transmission/motor/rearend either way. Just plan on it sooner now. $1500 for a good roller would be ok. For a running car thats great.

Re: 178,000 miles....too much?

For 1500, it's like paying for the motor and getting a free car. If someone presented me a $1500 Z-28 and the body was in good condition, I'd be marching into the bank and having a little supercharged 383 project for the future.

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah, it does need some work, like intake and opti spark that I mentioned and I also think a mass airflow sensor. I think I'll be putting some cash in his hand tomorrow.

Hell you could part the damn thing out for quite a bit more than that. I would be all over it.

Get as much info as possible on the car!!!!!! I can't stress that enough. I bought the Formula with 69k miles. The previous owner said he "babied" it. Maybe true but neglect can be worse than running the hell out of the car.
