Yes it will go. When? Now that is the real question.

2 vote for will blow, 2 vote for will not blow. Thats a big problem. Owners of the votes, please write a 1 sentence.

Will not blow. If the motor is healthy now, heads and cam won't kill it.

Like said above.. If the motor was well taken care of.. Good oil pressure, no groves in the cly. walls.. ect.. You should be ok.. I am getting ready to slide in a cam and heads too. I'm at 110k..

Re: 132k miles, with ported head and cam!!

im at 121k miles i was debating this since i bought the car.. but decided to stick with just throwing boltons untill there are no more to throw, my next wave is aftermarket elbow, airfoil, madz28 tune, 3.73 gear (think ill see a difference i have 2.83's or whatever now hah) ill also fix my leaking egr valve as thats annoying me now.. after i have all boltons done though (pulleys/ acdelete/stall/free ones) i was thinking of going with a nice head/cam package havent decided though because at that point i might just stay put with a fully bolted on car and wait for the thing to get tired (runs really strong now) and just do a 355/383 rebuild depending at budget at time

Re: 132k miles, with ported head and cam!!

I like being safe. When I originally set out to do my heads and cam, I was going to do it with the stock bottom end. Then one morning, I woke up and said "I would rather be safe and do the bottom end". Pretty much end of story there. When I learned it would cost me $800 to have it done? For some reason it didn't even phase me as a lot. I guess thats a good thing?

Re: 132k miles, with ported head and cam!!

well its not the heads and cam that kill the bottom end...its the over revving part that does that. the stock crank will hold...some builders even use the stock crank on some street/strip shortblock 383's. But if you are going to do it...do it right. I was sitting at 124xxx miles on mine and just said if I am going to do it, I am just going to do it...and check the sig...it all depends on your budget. If your motor is strong now and you dont have any problems and you got a short budget...do it. Dont get to excessive and watch your rpms.

Re: 132k miles, with ported head and cam!!

thanks guys..

my motor is fine.. l have had 7k miles on my car since l bought her, the car still runs good, l havent had any problems with the engine..
ok here is another question then..

if l put ported heads and cam on my girl, and lets say my engine did blew out, will l have to throw the heads and cam away or l can go ahead and rebuild her bone stock and use the same heads and cam, and get back that 400rwhp?

thanks..

Re: 132k miles, with ported head and cam!!

depends on what goes.. if you get metal all over the place it will probably take out the cam....

Heads are usually ok unless a piston goes BEWM. Might bend a valve tho depending...

There's a lot of variables to consider. Condition of the motor/bearings, installation, oil pressure after install, how the car will be driven, cleanliness, and so on.

Re: 132k miles, with ported head and cam!!

I'm in kinda the same boat as you, I've been wanting to do at least a cam only swap but the mileage on the motor (140k) and such has kept me from jumping in. I mean my ride runs great now, I'd be pretty bummed if I did a cam swap and the motor took a dump a couple weeks later. That and I just really don't want to actually do the work to swap it, lol. Were you going to pay a shop to do it or do it yourself? Do you have a A4 or a 6spd? If you've got a A4 that isn't too fresh (and maybe even if it is) you can probably bank on it biting the dust when you slap an extra 75rwhp on the car w/ heads/cam...

What mods do you already have now? If you don't have much of anything you might as well take care of the major stuff like headers and such before you worry about the heads/cam. Headers and such will be needed to really support the heads/cam potential anyway and they'll definitely help the car between now and then. Shop the classifieds for some used stuff, I scored everything on mine from this board for a fraction of the price of new stuff. {Edit} - I started to say I have a ALDL cable and a laptop that you could use to upload a tune since you're nearby, but I see you have a 97 w/ OBDII so that won't work unfortunately...

Re: 132k miles, with ported head and cam!!

well, l would love to do the jobs myself but it looks kinda hard and l havent decided anything yet.. l dont wanna throw my money away.. l am scared, what if the motor blows out.. l have auto tranny.. just rebuilt, it has 4k miles on it..new waterpump, brand new radiator it has 40 miles on it ( installed by me a few weeks ago) about mods.. l just got cat back flowmaster.. thats all..

l wish l would have a little bit money so l wouldnt worry about this, just get rid of her and buy an LS1 and relax..

if that catback is the only mod that you have, i'd suggest doing all the other supporting mods first...
