130,000 miles

How bad do you think the valves are in my 94Z? It has 130,000 miles on it. I think I am having some valvetrain problems........as in my motor dies off up top. All I can think is the springs and valves are probably bad, and the valves are burned or something.

Re: 130,000 miles

The valve springs may be weak, but I doubt the valves themselves are causing much of a problem.

Probably valve springs. Does it sound kind of funny at higher RPM?

Re: 130,000 miles

When my head gasket failed in the spring at 131,000 miles, had the heads reworked. The machinist said the valves were fine except for starting to "mushroom" at the top where the valve keepers are, had them replaced. The valve guides were fine, he just ran a hone through them. And lastly the valve springs... they were weak, had them replaced also.

Re: 130,000 miles

i would just stick in some new springs. Its really easy. I switched mine out when i went with 1.6rr's and my old ones were weak.

Re: 130,000 miles

swap the springs.
you can get LT4 springs for ~$35. its really a straight forward swap.
may also consider replacing the valve stem seals & valve cover gaskets while you're at it.

Do you know where i can get those LT4 springs for 34 bucks?

I'm not sure how it is suppose to sound up top, i got this car with over 100,000 miles.....it has always been pretty slow up top. I have tried all the tune-up things and is still slow up top......the engine does sound a little different when it gets higher, so maybe that's what's killing me up top is those darn springs......possiblility??

Well I can't really explain the sound. If you know what a motor is supposed to sound like, you will notice how it sounds. I just sounds "funny". Maybe someone can elaborate.

Valve springs are always a definate investment. Especially ones if you have 100k+ miles.

Re: 130,000 miles

You think I'll see a re-gain of lost power? I wonder what kindof 1/4 drop a new set of springs would do, if any.

Re: 130,000 miles

If they are completely worn out, then there would probably be a power increase. But also fuel mileage and other things.

Re: 130,000 miles

I can probably compress them with my hand lol. How crappy my car runs up top. Who knows maybe 13.5 isn't too bad for my mods, but i think i should be closer to a 13.1

wait until you have more than one or two items to order. Unless you live in FL, there is no tax. Only shipping which isn't bad.
