I'm no expert, but thinner oil flows better when its cold. I just swithed from 10w to 5w30 Mobil 1 this weekend

I see no problem as long as you stay with the same brand of oil. 5W-30 is design for cold weather conditions. It will be used for 3-4 months of used before it starts to warm up. Then that's when you'll come up on the next oil change.

I know it doesn't get that cold here, but I switched to the new Mobil 1 0w40 last oil change. This stuff rocks!! I get comparable cold start up pressure to 5 weight, and great pressure at high RPM.

I was wondering this also. Because i live in california where it doesn't get to cold. I'm using 10w30 right now and my pressure always is around the 60 mark. After i drive it for a while it goes down about some but not to much.I was wondering if that would be bad or not. I just changed my oil and put a new k&n oil filter about 1,000 miles ago so i didn't want to have to change again.

Yo

How over in NJ? Where temp gets to about 0 degrees farenheit... below 0 sometimes... not often. What should I be using?

You can go either way. Mobil 1 10-30 runs on the thin side anyway.

Why not just use what Chevy recommends? The designers of the engine probably know more about oil and what oil is best for the LT1 than anyone on this board.

I've been using 5w30 but after the last change and how black it was when it came out, I'm gonna go with 10w30 next time. I tend to get on it alot so the engine chews it up

Because GM also takes into account fuel economy when recommending an oil. Thinner oil=better fuel economy but less protection.
