#1 Reason to replace lifters w/new cam....

Well guys I found my problem....I went to the track this weekend and after my second run I had the symptoms of a collapsed lifter so I stopped for the day and brought the car home. So when I went to go take it apart today to see if it was infact a collapsed lifter I saw a couple of the rockers weren't on properly. So at first I though to myself that I was in luck and maybe they rockers weren't tightened properly and it would be an easy fix. Boy was I wrong, upon closer inspection I couldn't find one of the pushrods!!! I looked a inter the lifter valley through the head and saw it so I pulled it out with a magnet and the damn thing was snapped. Here is a pic of it: http://www.rpi.edu/~brownc2/temp2/pushrod.JPG

So to make a long story short, I overrevved the car on the stock lifters and collapsed a lifter which apparently in turn snapped a hardened pushrod.....so I guess I have to get the Comp R's after all

Sorry to hear that bro. I try to always suggest aftermarket lifters on cam swaps. I had a lifter collapse on my car with the stock valvetrain. And my car only had about 70k miles on it.

For this reason I stay away from the GM and Crane lifters. I was shocked to find out about others who ran into the same problems on their stock motors.

The worst part about my situation was, the valve ended up staying open and it kissed the piston and bent tbe valve. Now one of my pistons has a love tap on it lol.

So be happy it ended there. Could of been worse.

Good Luck

What do you consider over revving? I just got mine together (not even fired up yet) with the same exact set-up as you. I also reused my stock lifters and they have 80,000 on them.

Well I got my car tuned and the rev limiter was set to 6500 and I think that I was pretty close to the rev limiter when it happened. So I bet it was between 6400 and 6500 when it happened. Just be very careful when you get a tune and have the redline set, I am sending mine back to him to have it changed to probably 6200 or so, plus I am replacing the lifters with a much better set too

Did you "free rev" the engine? Otherwords miss a shift. Sounds to me like you had the rockerarms a little too tight and the lifter "pumped up". Usually this will break rocker studs. I have never run into a problem using original roller lifters on a new cam either in Ford or GM products.

Nope I didn't miss a shift. Shifted perfect, no grinding or anything. I thought that the rockers may have been too tight too, but it doesn't seem that could be the case because I have about 15-16 autocross runs on the new cam which were all done in first gear only so I had in high in the RPMs for all of those runs too, just not that high....

Oh well, looks like I gotta do the lifters after all.
