1.6 vs 1.7 roller rockers

I'm sure it's been discussed before. I did a search but came up with nothing. Maybe the decimal is throwing it off. Has anyone installed the two different ratios? Did you gain or loose power with one over the other? I'm collecting parts a piece at a time for a cam swap. (EWP, ATI balancer, MSD opti, Cloyes timing Chain, valve springs, etc..) When I get the RR's, I'll install them with the current setup until I have everything for the cam swap. Any difference between 1.6 and 1.7 RR?

Thanks

You can read my write up on installing the 1.7 Scorpion rockers on a stock motor. The end of the thread has some dyno numbers. This was before I installed the headers and MadZ28 tune.

https://www.camaroz28.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=422491

If you are going to do a cam swap, I would not bother with changing the rockers. Just get a cam with the lift #s you are looking for instead of getting lift from the rockers.

Going to a 1.7 rocker brings on a whole lot of other things to consider besides just the rocker itself (guideplates, pushrod length, head casting clearance, valvetrain control, springs, alignment, etc ...)

Thanks, I tried to document all my research in one place.

Surprisingly, the scorpions are not that loud once the guideplates are clearanced. Although, I am now in process of replacing the GMPP plates with Manley ones. I'll have to modify the LT4 cover supports a bit, but from what I've found, the Manley plates do a great job of aligning the rockers and reducing the lateral loading of the pushrod.

Check out post #40 in this thread to see why I'm ditching the GMPP plates. I suppose I should update my original thread with this info ........

Nice!!
i was going to do a motor swap but i have to spend money on my other z28 since some crack-head broke into my storage and stole my 396 set up.
so,now i can only do small bolt on things to my 96.Ported lt1 heads,2.00 1.57,beehive springs, scorpion 1.7s,hard pushrods and guide plates, pacesetter Lts,madz tune and Ltcc ignition system..
also changing the 2.5 true duals to 3" since i am putting cats back on the car!

After reading all the othreads it seems like the self aligning 1.6's with 7/16 stud and 918 springs would be a better choice for me. The 1.7's look like it may be too much extra effort and money. Especially since I want the cam changed not too far from now. Anyone have the parts list for the 1.6's. Lifters, pushrods, gaskets, and whatever else may be needed on a 100k mile car?

I found this one. Anything different with the 1.6's?

Comp Cams Hardened Pushrods ENG-7808-16-Comp http://speed-eng.com
Comp Cams 987 Springs 987-16 http://www.flatlanderracing.com
10* Steel retainers (Dont have a part number as I can't determine which ones I'll need)
Stem Locks (Dont have a part number as I can't determine which ones I'll need)
Valve Seals 10212810 & 12564582 http://www.gmpartsdirect.com
GM Guideplates 14011051 http://www.gmpartsdirect.com
ARP 7/16 Studs ENG-134-7103-ARP http://speed-eng.com

Look further down in that thread and you will find an updated parts list with #s for the locks and retainers. The list you have above was the preliminary list.

You will not need the guideplates if you get self aligning rockers.

You'll need:
  • 1.6 self aligning rockers
  • 7/16" studs (if you go with 7/16" rockers)
  • Springs
  • Locks
  • Retainers
  • Valve seals
  • Hardened pushrods (recommended but not required)
  • Valve cover gaskets

I would recommend you get rockers which come with polylocks, as they make setting valve lash much easier!

If you plan to do this yourself, you'll need access to a spring compressor tool.

Don't think you'll find a 1.6 self-aligning rocker that uses a 7/16" stud.
