1.6 rockers breaking stock springs
1.6 rockers breaking stock springs
I have read many posts on this subject, and most say do not risk it, yet I have not run across any posts from someone who has ran 1.6's on stock springs and broken a spring. I would like to hear from those who have run the combination with problems and those who have done so without.
I realize I can pick up lt4 springs on the cheap and would therefore not have to worry about it. That said, I think this may be a "cry wolf" subject and I would like to look at what has actually happened when this combo has been tried. Please do not respond with the lift the stock springs are rated for and how the 1.6's will be right at that limit, I know this.
thanks,
jim

I have personally broken valvesprings with the use of 1.6rrs on a basically stock car, Note I was using nitrous though.. You usually dont know you broke one unless you dissasemble your heads. Click here to see my spring
Re: 1.6 rockers breaking stock springs
I've read the same thing a million times over the last 6 years or so, the guy above is the first guy I've ever heard to say he actually broke one. I know guys who are supercharged and run 1.6 for years on stock springs without breaking. I road race mine, the thing is at 6000+ RPM on a regular basis and at otherwise full throttle for 30-45 minutes at a time- and that for about the last 30,000 miles. No problems. Of course if I had known I would be road racing I'd have upgraded, but I didnt, and the thing still runs like a stripped a*s ape. My $.02
Re: 1.6 rockers breaking stock springs
why would you even risk pushing the limits, the catastrophic damages that WILL evolve from such a moronic attempt to "save" money/time/labor will backfire in the end. The springs are cheap, you can change them yourself easily in a day, and thats one less thing to worry about breaking when you beat the snot out of the car like we all know you're going to.
Re: 1.6 rockers breaking stock springs
Well how do you know one is not broken.. I had NO clue till I took the valve springs out. Not performance changes. w/ 1.6rrs at 6200 you start getting valven float.. not a good thing, a performance killer. So point being, you can get away with the 1.6's but with a cam change that increases lift any, you need a valvespring to match it!

I did it, when I rebuilt my heads I noticed one was broken, in the same identical spot as his. I have 1.6RR and the springs had 156k miles on them.
