1.6 Rocker Arms

I am looking for information on 1.6 rr's. Are the stock rr's self-aligning? Can I put 1.6 rr's with a stock cam and spring motor without hurting it? What kind of hp can I expect by just installing the rr's? I do have a CAI and complete exhaust system (headers, y-pipe, new high flow cat and hooker cat back) on my '94 Z28. Please make some recommendations. Thanks..

Re: 1.6 Rocker Arms

I would suggest changing springs while your at it to fit the cam you will go with later just because it is easy to do once your in there the stock rockers are 1.5 sa rockers if you go to 1.6 you will either need the sa rockers or the nsa with a set of guide plates. If you put the nsa rockers on you might as well put on a set of arp rocker studs. Lt4 springs are a cheep replacement spring that will hold you over untill you do the cam swap and will not kill your $$$

Since we are on the subject, do you only need guide plates if you have NSA rockers? and is there a real diference between 3/8 studs and 7/16?

Guide plates are only for NSA rockers...don't try to use them with SA rockers. As far as the studs go, I've been using 3/8" ARP studs for a while now and with a few different setups (GM 847 w/ 1.6 rockers, Comp 218/224 w/ 1.7 rockers, Comp 218/224 w/ 1.6 rockers)...I haven't snapped one of them yet. If you haven't bought rockers yet, you might as well buy 7/16" rockers and studs. If you already have a set of 3/8" rockers, I wouldn't be afraid to run them so long as you use the ARP studs. Stock studs will snap, period (ask me how I know).

Re: 1.6 Rocker Arms

Thanks for all the info guys. It sounds like the 7/16 studs are the way to go. Can I install them while the heads are on the car? Are the stock studs pressed in or screwed in? I just got the car two months ago and I am still learning what the late model engines need and want. I have not bought the roller rockers yet. I hope too between now and Xmas. Maybe a gift to myself. I guess I will do the LT4 springs while I am at it too. Thanks again!

The studs screw in. I gained 7 rwhp and 2 ft. lbs. of torque at the wheels, dyno proven. Yes, you can do this job (carefully) with the heads still on the car.

Re: 1.6 Rocker Arms

I have stock springs and i have 1.6 SA RR running with no problem. I only had 20k miles when i installed them and now i have 30k miles. I didn't bother because i didn't feel like i could have done it myself and i had a low mileage motor. And for the CC306 you need springs that could hold .600 lift. LT4 springs can't handle that. I got SA RR for a good deal before i read up about it much and I would go with NSA and guideplates if i could. If your going to get a cam and rev the car high I would feel safe with the NSA. And defintely get new studs. Good luck.

Well the plan is NSA RR, guide plates from GMPP, ARP 3/8 studs, port/polish, springs and something like a CC306 (anyone have a good link for dyno numbers on that cam) along with the full exhaust.

Re: 1.6 Rocker Arms

How about install? How hard is it and what special tools are required if any. Has anyone seen more that 7rwhp and 2 rwtq from this mod? Will I have to tighten them a few times after the install?

I am thinking about getting either some SA Pro Mags with LT4 springs or GMPP RR with LT4 springs. I know the Pro Mags are better for future modding, but I am going for bolt ons right now.

Which type are easiest to maintain? How about to install? Does this affect any other aspects of the engine, negatively or postively?

Thanks.

Re: 1.6 Rocker Arms

Well, I've looked at this a lot, and it seems that the most bulletproof system is:

Good quality 7/16" ARP or CC studs (ARP Pro series are the top of the line)
CC Pro-Magnum NSA 1.6 RR's
GM guideplates
Hardened Pushrods (or Hi-Tech Chromemoly for even more piece of mind)
Appropriate springs (LT4 springs if you are keeping stock cam)

Re: 1.6 Rocker Arms

The more and more I search it I see the same:

Nonself Aligning as being sought out most
beefier springs, at least LT4 on stock cam
7/16 Stud for added strength
Hardened pushrod for the guideplates, I am trying to figure out if my 94 has them
GM Guideplates, the only failsafe guideplate.

I was just looking to get some extra muscle out of my bolt on car, I didnt really want to do a E-WP since realibility is an issue, plus mine mechanical is pretty new.

Looks pretty easy to install after finding an install guide at street illusions racing.

Also how much modification has to be done to the valve covers? Any pics, cause I've never had mine off.

Thanks

'94 LT1's come from the factory with hardened pushrods.

False.

Hardened pushrods were only in 95's.
