I think the HD (53gpm) model needs a little modification to the radiator fan mounting. The normal (43gpm) doesn't need any modification.

Re: ** Lest talk water pumps**

One thing that needs cleared up:

chain driven water pumps will pump proportionately to the engine's speed.

electric water pumps don't flow quite as much as regular WPs.

benefit = in daily driver/short drag runs/idle in traffic the electric will pump more

downfall = roadracing is one type of motorsport that many guys won't go to an electric WP because it won't flow enough fluid to keep up with the constant running at 120+mph redlining it all the time.

For just about anything else though, I don't see why not, if I wasn't pinched for money when mine went out, I would have gone electric.

Not to mention between drag runs you can keep the WP running to cool the engine

Re: ** Lest talk water pumps**

I have an electric waterpump and I wish I had a mechanical pump. While its true mechanical pumps fail just like electric pumps fail, the mechanical pump will typically give you a warning signal like coolant dripping out of the wheep hole. Electric pumps generally just blow out... they blow a fuse and theyre done for good.

It does keep my motor at a cool 175 degrees on a hot summer day on the highway and Ill agree changing out the electric pump is pretty easy. I just dont think risking the life of a potentially very expensive motor is worth 10 proven hp or that extra few hours of downtime if the pump needs replaced. Thats just me... after owning an Fbody for several years reliability means more to me than anything else.

hmmm good point. . . but they say there is a way where you can wire it to let you know when it goes

My stock one just failed for the second time in just over one year. So don't make that be the reason you don't choose one.
If you want to get the most power possible bolt on only, i recommend the electrical. The stock one is probably better for every day driving.

Yes you can wire up indicator lights or even buzzers but that wont prevent the pump from failing and once the warning indicator alerts you of the problem, the pump will have stopped circulating coolant. It doesnt take but less than 30 seconds for coolant in the heads to top 300 degrees once the pump quits.

Re: ** Lest talk water pumps**

Its a crap shoot. I still have my original WP from 1995 and it works fine...I am tempted by the hp gain, even if its little, to try to eek every last bit of power out of my combo. My neighbor has an Meziere EWP and it works great, but he's had his relay fail a few times which was a little scary, but no big deal. Painless makes a wiring kit for them and the shop I use, F-body Central, can wire in an alert system that senses current draw and will signal you if it starts to fail, but I'm always worried about burning a wire or something and being stranded...If I do go with one it'll be the Meziere unless someone can give me info on the Summit one that has a 10,000 hour seal life. I guess you take a risk with either one you choose...You also have to figure how much you drive the car. 2500 hours can go by quick if its a daily driver...

Wow, you beat me to it, i was going to say that. I don't see any reason not to run an electric one, especially since hey have the provisions to monitor the pump. Its a proven 8-10 HP, much easier to change if one was to go out, and gives you the ability to run a good timing set like already stated. If anyone is that worried about being stranded, because of the water pump....then you can relatively easily change a E WP on the side of the road, the mechanical...not so easy, you can also keep an extra pump in your car if your worried about the reliablilty issues as well. If you take the proper precautions I don't really see any reason not to run an electric pump. At least the Electric ones give a life expectency, the mechanical ones can't even do that.

ill take 10 rwhp for that mod, it also gives you that much torque. Which means it raises the entire rpm band. Thats more then 10 hp and more then worth it to me.

Re: ** Lest talk water pumps**

Doing the math if you drive 2 hours a day, everyday, which is alot, its like a little less than 3 1/2 years...I guess that aint too bad...Considering I drive my car maybe 4000 miles a year...Ya'll may have convinced me to give it a try....The EWP, plus Kooks stepped headers may get me closer to the 10s looking bone stock...Guess you can teach and old dog new tricks...

Re: ** Lest talk water pumps**

My first CSI didnt last 3 years. I think it was about 30k miles which were 90% highway driven.

Im not trying to talk anybody away from buying an electric pump. I think it was a fun mod and I learned a good deal from it such as wiring in a relay. But I also learned how fast you can go from cool motor to blistering hot motor if something fails like the wiring or the relay or the pump.
