Re: $5000 to spend on my LT-1 questions

Well guys it looks like i have a intake leak! I can feel a ridged hose coming from behind the intake, and from the driver side down i feel fresh oil.

I had the bottom end done by a shop here in San Diego. That cost me just under 1500 for the labor and bearings. The crank i got by doing some shopin around on ebay. Found someone on there that had a business and was sellin the cranks for around $300 bucks if i remember right.. might have been less. my crank was actually drop shipped from Eagle directly to me. Rods i found on ebay for $282. Pistons i found once again on ebay, through a business and ended up ordering direct from them for $252. Rings were actually one of the most expensive items i bought, $266 for those. The billet caps were another $45. That's $2387 so far.(actual bill from builder was $1469 complete balanced/blueprinted/assembled). Oil pan cost me like $216 since i wasn't stuck buying an LT1 specific pan i bought the cheaper Drag race pan. I got the milen oil pump though a hook up for $8 right off the shelf at pepboys. Got the pick up with the pan for i believe 30 something.
So I'm at $2596 now. Bottom end done, complete.
Custom cam from comp........ $248 through an online company
Heads..... traded a and extra LT1 complete drivetrain with an auto i had laying around for those , not a big seller these days so those basically only cost me about $1100 at the most. Which is about what the guy paid for the work done on them.
Head studs.... $130 from summit
Bronze oil pump drive gear.... $39.95... summit
injectors......... $254.88.... summit
better springs to match the cam..... $160 with all the hardware(seats, retainers, clips)
Pro Mag rockers... $259.88 Summit
Cloyes Double roller timing set...$74.39 Summit

I think that's about it... grand total $4,864..
I was a little off.. but since that's everything... i don't think i did too bad with my bargain shopping. Towards the end i stopped shoppin around cause i just wanted to get it finished.. was 2 years in the waiting since my son was born 2 months after i blew my stocker. But not bad in my opinion. So it's deffinatly doable for under $5k in my opinion. And if he's got $7k to spend now.. well..he's pretty much set.

Chas
The only ridged hose behind the intake would be your EGR tube that comes from your manifolds.. Intake oil leak is an easy fix, for the cost of new intake gaskets and a tube of RTV.

If you haven't fixed the intake leak yet I suggest you buy "THE RIGHT STUFF"
it sticks like you would not believe. I have been wrenching since the early 80s and have never seen an RTV like sealant that is as tenacious as "THE RIGHT STUFF" I used it on a rear-end and when I pulled it apart I had to used a razor on both surfaces to remove it.

You did a great job finding some deals however;
I believe you're missing some things: for example what did you do for a H20 pump since you used the cloyes double roller? A MEZ hd will put you over the 5K mark and there is a bunch of little stuff you left off of the list. Pushrods, head gaskets, injectors, intake gaskets, tune etc? In my experience its the little things that are what make up the bulk of the bill.

There were some things left off from your build.... gaskets and seals?, guideplates?, tuning?, reuse stock opti?, plug wires?, new plugs?, or did you reuse all the stuff from the old motor? There are alot of missing items there. You cant just throw a bunch of parts together.... you got to support the build up.

Or maybe just add a LT4 hot cam and have my heads ported or get new heads.

I would like a soild 350 to 400 hp, i just dont see a need to tear the engine down if the crank is bad, and not do some mods while the motor is apart.

I'm not looking for super HP like 500 or more!

A complete engine 4500+shipping.
Save another 450$ and you should have enough to have one helluva setup.
