$10,000 ballpark for LT1 Rebuild?? about right??
I gave http://www.eastcoastsupercharging.com/ a call today to get a quote on how much it would cost to rebuild my engine. I told them I wanted to do a Heads/Cam, 383 Stroker Kit w/forged crank and pistons..etc. All the good stuff... Anyways, a very rough estimate he gave was $10,000 for drop off and pick up. All parts and labor etc. This price even includes the street and dyno tuning. They said they would put about 150 miles on the car to street and dyno tune it. Does this quote sound about right?? How much did you guys have to pay to get all of this done? I can't do it myself because #1 I don't have a place to do it, and #2 i don't know how to do it. I don't want to go messing around with the engine and porting stuff without the proper equipment and experience. Are there any other places in the Tri-State Area that I can try out. I've already contacted CarTech in NJ, but they don't work on LT1s anymore. I appreciate the help. Thanks guys
Ask about a warranty.
You will get many varied responses. We have some folks here who can supposedly build a 10 second stroker for less than $2000.00 and other who have spent $10,000.00 and up and their cars run like crap.
Basically, a soup to nuts 383 stroker with top quality parts with a tune and warranty in my opinion is probably worth $10,000.00 if you want a plug and play type solution. Just make certain the shop will stand behind their work and make sure you have a time frame for completion of work. If they are a top quality shop they will want that too.
My short block was $4000.00 assembled. Heads were another $2,000.00, ballpark, verymany othe rlittle parts andpieces from plygs to coil, to oil pan, to MSD box, to computer work, to whatever all added up. Then it had too much torque and spun the tranny so I needed a beefier transmisssion and hetter stall converter. Figure another couple of grand. Ok, Make it $1,200 for the tranny, $500.00 for the torque converter, and maybe you end up needing a custom driveshaft too and driveshaft loop.
Don't forget the 12 bolt rear from Moser that is another $2,000.00 give or take a couple of hundred...
I think if the shop comes through and does a great job you will have received a good value for your money. If you sense that anything isn't right, go somewhere else.
Go look here: http://www.lingenfelter.com/home.asp These guys are expensive but to the best of my knowledge have always exceeded their claims. Consider these guys the high end of what you are seeking and then exercise some common sense and good judgement in making your decision.

They said the $10,000 would include the highest quality top-end parts. However I'll have to ask about warranty and stuff. The guy said it would only take about 3 weeks...give or take a few days, depeding on other projects and stuff. He sounded pretty legit over the phone, but again, it's hard to tell, since I've had no prior experience with them or know anyone who has. He also mentioned that it would be easier to have the shop order all the parts and stuff because if there are any problems they can deal directly with the retailer...which is what all shops will probably say. How much would I actually be saving by ordering the parts myself? If there were problems with the order (wrong parts...etc) wouldn't it just delay the install process? If anyone has had any experience with http://www.eastcoastsupercharging.com/ let me know what you think. Thanx

If you shop around, you can probably find a good deal out there. It will probably range from 6 to 14 thousand. Depends on the quality you want.
If your looking in the tri-state area check out www.stage1automotive.com. They are first class. Not that eastcoastsupercharing is not. I'm sure Chris was giving you one hell of a engine for 10,000. Did you discuss a buget with him. I do all my dyno tuning there. Its a great place. But check out stage1first.
10k would be good if they removed and installed the engine. For a stroker rebuild, i'm going to go with less that 5k for top quality stuff, not counting machine work, which may net you another 1k. It basically depends on what your getting.
I wouldn't go for 10k though, thats an extremely high price. I've found people that throw out estimates and say it's for the best products know to man tend to be lackluster engine builders.

It's not just a stroker kit install...he's also doing the heads for me. He's porting them to match the cam...changing the valve springs...etc. Does it make the price sound a little more reasonable?

Ask for a written estimate which lists the specific parts by manufacturer and part number and your price. You have a right to know what's going into your engine. Labor and machining is a big factor in an engine build, so don't be surprised at the labor bill. Also, your engine may require more or less machining depending on its condition. These costs can vary.
Your engine should ideally be designed specifically for your application. Ask if there is a specific design charge, or is it part of the service if you buy the engine.
Part of the engine builder's profit is markup on parts. He can buy them for less than you can because he may be a distributor, and if he marks them up to approximately to Jeg's or Summit pricing you aren't getting hosed.
Ask if you can stop into the shop when your engine is being assembled to see it. Ask if you'll receive flow charts for your exact pair of heads.
Also ask about payment terms. Virtually every engine builder has been stuck with a partially or fully complete engine because the buyer "ran out of money". They may want some money up front, or as progress payments.
ththub makes some very good points. Consider carefully what he said.

I'm good friends with Chris and Doug at East Coast Supercharging. They did a lot of small work on my LT1 before they moved from Monclair to their new location.
They are very nice guys. You should talk to them, and get to know them. You will definetly get your money's worth, and im sure you'll like their attitude toward their work. But you do have the right to bargain, so make sure you know what you want.
From what I know, they have the worlds fastest stock bottom end LT1. 9.XX stock pistons, rods, and crank. With a lot of nitrous.
