I'm about to do the whole headers/y-pipe/catback thing on my 2000 ss and was wondering if a change in the y-pipe is really going to get me enough power to justify the money spent on one. also, would just switching to a high-flow cat help? thanks!

what kind were you looking at?

long tubes pretty much requires a new pipe

shorties don't

mids also require them

 

I was thinking about jet-hot long tubes and the jet-hot y-pipe with cats and gmmg catback

Your set-up looks pretty good to me. Those LT's are going to help a lot.

I think the answer to your questions is yes, buy the y-pipe. You need it anyway to use the lt headers and if you look the factory y pipe it looks flattened and not very flow friendly. as for the cats you need new cats also with the lt headers.

Actually if you really look at it. You'll realize that the cross sectional flow area of the crush pipe is actually slightly greater than that of the rest of the y-pipe ... and is as flow friendly, if not more so, than the rest of the y-pipe ... that said, you still need a new y-pipe with LTs.

Also any cats will have to be welded into the new y-pipe. That can be done just as effectively with the stock cats as it can with new cats ... so new cats are not needed ...

 

yeah, i never looked at it that way, maybe the overall diameter is larger in the crushed area. as for the cats, isn't the new y pipe 3"? aren't the oe cats a narrower diameter?
