wtf? wheel bearing bad?!?!

is it common for the wheel bearing to go bad? i thought my brake pads were gettin worn out because i was hearing some squealing. i thought they were extra bad because i also heard something that sounded like metal grinding. anyways i took the wheel off which produced the noise and examined the pad. the pad isnt even half way worn out. anyways with the car jacked up i can barely get the wheel to spin. even with the wheel off i can barely spin the rotor. the other side spins very freely. the car has 45xxx miles on it. what the hell is the problem. the sound is awful and i believe the wheel should spin free but i can barely turn it with all my mite. the car isnt pulling when i drive. someone suggested the wheel bearing is probably bad. could that be it. i really have no clue. anyways at advance auto parts, i would have to get the whole hub assembly for like $107 if that is the problem. also would this be under warranty. i bought the car used 2 months ago from a big dealership and they gave me a 6 month bumper to bumper warranty. what does everyone think of my fiasco?

My wheelbearing went out at 8,000 miles. And yours sounds really shot.
And I'd definately take it to the dealer if they warranteed the car for 6 months.

Hope you are lucky and ONLY have a bad wheel bearing. I thought I had a wheel bearing going out on my SS and it turned out that the whole rear end needed rebuilding. Turned out to be a $750 job. New pinion nut, crush sleeve, carrier bearings, wheel bearings, ect. The owner of the shop told me in the last 2 years he's done the same job on 15 late model f-bodies. Good luck!!

Cool

Today I took the rear cover off my 99 Z28 rear . There was a grinding sound when the wheels turned and stoped when you came to a stop . The problem was the side Bearings on the posi unit , the right side bearing was shot . I replaced the bearings , pinion seal, axle seals, and checked the axle bearing but they were ok . Everything else looked fine . I put snythectic oil and GM additive back in and its like a new car . Make sure you check all the bearings when you have it apart . Good luck

today i took it in and they said they couldnt find anything. i then repeated the problems, then they took the car back into the shop and let another guy test drive it. they said there is nothing wrong but the sound could be from a cracked pad (i doubt its cracked). the wheel not being able to turn could be from dirt in the brake line or the caliper is trying to freeze up on me. anyways i guess ill keep driving it until something happens!
