Winter Tires....

Well here in MA (especially by my school) Mother Nature tends to like to skip fall and jump right to winter, so it shouldn't be too long till we hit snow.

Anyways, what are good winter tires? Where can I get them? Should I get four, or just two for the rear?

Whatever you get, get 4 of them.

I used BFG Comp TA All season performance tires (245’s even) in the winter and I get around just fine. I have never gotten stuck, and never lost control (except when intentionally ****ing around in parking lots ).

Just get cheap tires, throw a couple of sand bags in the rear, and take it slow.

Unless you live on a hill or something, I don’t think you need studded ones.

It is worth it get a set of cheap rims too ($75-100 for ones like mine). Else you are going to spend $80 a year mounting and unmounting tires.

If you want actual, dedicated snow tires... I've had good luck with Bridestone Blizzak's on my 99 Z28.

Did you definately notice a difference with them? I could only find them in 225/55R16s, would that fit on the factory 16" wheels? (I have 245s on now).

I've also heard good things about the Pirelli Winter 210 SnowSports and the Dunlop Winter Sports M2s.

I figure I'll just get the snow tires mounted on my current wheels. That will give me an excuse to get some Cragar wheels in the spring!

4 of these on a 4wd truck

Though if you must drive your f-body then I'd say Blizzaks.

Can you get smaller (narrower) rims? When I drove last winter on the stock tires they almost acted like snow boards. I was all over the place. Will smaller rims fit on a Z without any mods. I was thinking of some V6 takeoffs.

I have a set of Blizzaks wating to go onto my car. They're 215/65 R16's I believe. I have yet to use them, but they have an awesome reputation.

Check out www.tirerack.com for some decent prices on tires. I've gotten my last 2 sets of tires from them. They usually get them to you within 3 days of ordering. Also they have head to head comparisons of winter tires, including the Blizzaks.

Speaking of snowboards, I use to have 335 michelin pilots on my vette.Drove thru 2 winters in WI. The original 285 GSC's were actually good in the snow with the ASR. On my 99Z, the goodyear eagle HP's are worthless in the snow. Tough to beat Blizzaks when the snow flies.
