will LS6 drop into 98 t/a?

buddy of mine has a 98 t/a and he recently told me some guy was selling a complete ZO6 motor w/ computer, driveshaft, and tranny. my question is what can be used and what has to be modified to accept the engine? what is the easiest way to drop in the motor?

Corvettes use a different PCM, oil pan, throttle control , and maybe a few other pieces. He could probably do heads and cam cheaper, and make way more power.

It drops right in, a guy in our club did it with no issues at all, well actually the dealer dropped it in. Cost a chunk of change....be better off with a fully fordged bottom end with LS6 heads and monster cam

^^^ Exactly. The car's computer doesn't care whether it's the factory LS1 or an LS6 under the hood.....most things should hook up the same, but if necessary, change any fittings/sensors on the LS6 to what the factory LS1 had, and then just have the car's computer re-programmed. Physically, the LS1 and LS6 are identical (kinda like a 265 SBC will bolt up where a 302/350/400 SBC bolt-up).

The Z06 tranny would be a good thing to have, but I'm not sure how they bolt up since the 'Vettes have a "trans-axle" instead of using the traditional "motor/transmission" configuration? However, if it would bolt up, they use closer gear ratios than the regular T-56, so it would improve acceleration even with factory 3.42's.

i dunno bout the tranny fitting...internally its probably the same but in C5s the transaxle is mounted backwards connected directly to the rear differential...im not sure what you would have to do about bellhousings and such or even if a vette unit could be swapped in at all...dont bother anyway the LS1 T56 is a plenty stout unit and a set of 4.10s are cheaper than the vette tranny+making it fit anyway....

my vote would go to taking the motor itself and just reusing the f-body throttle linkage, oil pan and stuff. then he'd have a forged bottom end, Z06 heads, cam and intake and a completely stock appearing T/A with a nasty little secret...

Are you all listening? The C5 oil pan has wings that will not clear and F-body K-member.

Just swap on the F-body pan. Problem solved.

However, I'd just do the heads and cam instead of all that work and it is cheaper.

Could you install the 'Vette's drive by wire system?

I've seen a few guys selling kits and such. I'm not sure it is worth it. I had drive by wire on a VW GTI I owned, it was "sluggish" compared to a throttle cable. However, this was only when trying to trick it (bouncing the gas pedal in first gear to "chirp" the tires with rapid throttle input). So it is not a bad system, just a lot of work to make a working throttle work differently.

Plus you'd have to swap over a lot of the accessories and pulleys on the front, as they are configured differently in the 'vette.

heads & cam is the way I'd go...

I'm still in the middle of an LS6 swap in my '98.

Here's the thread from last month on the swap:
