WHY THE HELL does my belt keep trying to come off?
its a damn good thing i look at my engine on a regular basis (for no good reason).
this is the 3rd time is 1.5 months that my belt has tryed to work its way off
i just checked it, and just like the other times, the belt was only halfway on the tensioner, and power steering pulley.
i just use the long metal bar part of a screwdriver to push it back on and it usually snaps back into place with just a decent amount of sideways pressure.
the belt is mint, (except for the edge of it toward the front of the engine bay, that is scuffed a little from my screwdriver shaft) the ribs are fine.
the ribs on all the pulleys are perfect, theres NOTHING touching the belt or trying to push it ANYWHERE, and i've never seen it move off of anything except the tensioner and power steering pulley.
i don't think i need to tell you guys how bad it would be if i was driving and lost my power brakes, steering, waterpump, alternator, etc...
can anyone explain this?
i mean i don't see a problem ANYWHERE. what do i do?
thanks
Jared

Check your belt tensioner then, the spring inside may be wearing out and it may not put enough pressure on the belt, which would cause it to slip. Also, what belt are you using? I've been having good luck with the Goodyear Gatorbacks on both of my LS1 powered vehicles.
Is there a lot of "play" on the tensioner ? If so it might need changing, I got rid of my stock one for a Katech unit after my ASP pulley install.

belt seems to be pretty tight...
gimme some specs on what you would consider a loose tensioner to be like?

Re: WHY THE HELL does my belt keep trying to come off?
the easiest hing i could say is if you had a beam type toque wrench, see how much torque it took to turn the tensioner. and you wouldn't loose your power brakes
Re: WHY THE HELL does my belt keep trying to come off?
Take the belt off and see if the tensioner has "SNAP" to it. If it dosen't snap back, not dry-firing it, it won't move very quickly on it's own... Trust me you'll know if it is.... If it's slow to react then hit it w/ some teflon lube or some other penitrating lube. I've fixed a couple tensioners that were getting "slow", by doing that....

Check to see if all pulleys are lined up correctly and there is no play in the pulleys, especially the alternator and others that have bearings that might be causing the pulley to move in and out.JHMO
