Why exactly do you guys change the "Lid"

Hey guys, i am new to the LS1, but why do you change the "lid" on the car? Also, is there a CAI for the LS1? Where is the best place to get a Lid? Thanks

Re: Why exactly do you guys change the "Lid"

The "lid" is referring to the airbox lid. The factory one is low, and baffled, whereas aftermarket ones are smooth and opened up a lot more compared to the factory one. Replacing the lid is "like" putting a CAI on an LT1. You'll get more intake flow for sure. There are real "cold air kits" that work like "ram air".....the Super Sucker Ram Air kit, and the Fast Toys Ram Air kit (commonly referred to as SSRA or FTRA). There is also the FRA (free ram air) mod, that is just cutting out some of the plastic from underneath the air filter.....again, just to reduce the intake restriction.

Try this, get like a 1 inch section of a drink straw. Pinch the straw so that the opening is a thin oval shape. Try sucking air in. Now let it be a nice open circle, and try sucking air in. Now, pretend you're an ls1. This is the difference between our stock POS airlid, and an aftermarket one.

Exactly what was said. The air lid is definitely worth it's price. That should be one of, if not the first, performance mod you purchase.

shamrockcustoms: This is true about air lids and MAFs, however, a modified MAF or an aftermarket MAF will need PCM tuning.

Which MAFs are you referring to? Properly calibrated MAFs will not require you to get a tune.

Re: Why exactly do you guys change the "Lid"

Change the lid but not the MAF. The stock maf will be good for 450hp. There are big threads discussing this on a few different boards including this one. I am not going to go into discussion about this nor do I want to hijak this thread over the maf subject.
And yes there are alot of lids out there. All the lids do the samething, the only thing different is where you get it.

I didnt know that SS's with the SLP package came with the lid. I just thaught it had the exhaust that exits in the middle, better maniflods, and the hood. My friend's SLP SS came with the factory lid...

I think the better lid/exhaust was part of the 245HP package offered in 2002 only.
