Where to get a good heavy duty rear end?

Hello all.

Well, I finally have my car about where I want it to be, with one exception... I need to get 4:10 gears back in it. Previously I just swapped the gears out, and I loved the feel of the car, but after breaking two sets I realized that's not the way to go. I've been running with the stock 3:42s in there, but now I have some extra money, so I'm ready to swap out for the whole rear end with a beefier 4:10 setup.

Can anyone recommend a place where I can buy a complete heavy duty rear end assembly, ready to be swapped into my car? See my sig for vehicle details.

Thanks for any advice,

Hot Pastrami

If you want a stronger rear-end, you have to get either a 12 bolt or a 9" rear. Unless you're packing MAJOR power (ie: 650+) you don't need a 9" though, and should go with the 12 bolt. The two main companies that make them are Moser and Strange. Either rear can be ordered from many different f-body performance websites. (Tbyrne's the only site I've seen though that has the Strange)

Which one to get? Well, I've heard good and bad's about each one. I've got a Moser, and I'm extremely happy with it. The only thing I wish it didn't do was the chattering noise coming from the kevlar clutches on the posi, but that's normal, and the Strange uses the same Eaton posi unit, so it iwll have it as well. Be prepared to spend a pretty penny though, as my Moser cost me $2300 total, and a Strange will most likely run you a little more. Stranges tend to take a long time to get though, whereas the Moser will be at your house about a week after you order it.

The Strange comes fully assembled and ready to go, whereas the Moser, you have to get your brake backing plates pressed on the axles and then put the axles into the rear yourself, no biggie there though.

So Moser 12 bolt or Strange 12 bolt. Take your pick.

Wow, $2300... ouch. I was guesstimating about $1500. Hmm. I don't suppose that there's an in-between answer, is there? Like maybe a company that makes some really strong gears that fit in the stock carrier? Or maybe I could find a 12-bolt at a wrecking yard, but then it would probably be a big project to make it work on my car.

If it's helpful, I do care about keeping the posi and ABS, but not about traction control.

Thanks,

HP

the slp 12 bolt looks nice also, but none are going to be had for around 1500 unless you find one hell of a sale. probably right about looking for one used.

I want something inbetween also as a thought(mostly after seeing $$ earlier) Cant you do a little better then the stock unit say Better bearings, the strange gears, girdle and different posi unit like Auburn or better?? just to get tougher then normal.I going to be putting mine on road tracks soon and have been wanting to do some sort of beefing back there....but prob. will end up coughin up the doe for the 12bolt.
If I was I wouldnt pay 1900 for used when new aint that far off
