When to change belts...

I alreaday have 53000 miles on my car and never had any belts changed and now when i turn the car on it makes a loud squealing noise around the belts .. I add some engine lube and goes away.. So I think i probably need a the serpentine belt. Wanted to know if im right and what belt should I get.

Engine lube on the belt? Bad idea. I would think it would be the tensioner, but with that oil on them, do the tensioner and new belts. Clean that lube off the pulies before installing.....

I meant something like 10w-40 i used to stop it from making noise.. it only worked for a bit.. I dont think its the sepentine belt its the belt right under it which i think is the tensioner belt (smaller thinner belt) Who makes better belts Gates or acdelco...

Man you really need to take your car to a mechanic. You NEVER get oil anywhere near a drive belt. And the little belt is the one that runs the air conditioner comperssor.

I would remove both belts, clean all the belt contact areas real good with something that'll cut the WD-40,and replace them with Goodyear Gatorback's. I had squealing several years back & did what I'm suggesting to you & it took care of the noice. You'll like the Gatorback's,better than AC DELCO & Gates.PLease don't ever use anything on or near the belts, not even belt dressing, very bad.

I had the same problem and my belts looked fine too but over time I believe due to expansion and contraction, belts grow harder and harder aswell as looser and looser. I first figured it was a pulley but after changing to a new belt, the sound went away... It's definately the belts...

No, it is easy. Make sure there is a routing diagram, or make one.

Re: When to change belts...

Should be a routing diagram under the hood near the latch/radiator area,if not take pictures or draw one.No special tools needed, just put a 1/2 in drive socket wrench with socket that fits nut on the front of the belt tensioner pulley or large wrench,& turn wrench like you're trying to tighten(I believe)the nut & it will move tensioner so belt will slip off,do the same when putting belt back on,once you do it you'll be suprised how easy it is !

Re: When to change belts...

yes there is a routing diagram under the hood. You may as well replace the AC belt while youre under there because if it goes bad in the future you will have to pull the main belt off again to change it. BTW These guys are over reacting about the wd-40, you have nothing to worry about.

Re: When to change belts...

Glad you changed them.

It is not pretty. WD40 is used to lubricate things. You don't want to do that to belts that are designed to have friction......
