What's the benefit to.....

Going with the off road y-pipe versus a catted one? Is the flow that much better, what about the noise level?

Re: What's the benefit to.....

I know that modern day catalytic convertors are really efficient, especially compared to the older style ones which DID rob a lot of power. IIRC average gains for gutted cats was only about 5 rwhp. On the plus side it's a lot cheaper to go the non catted route.

Also, some complain of a raspy sound when they get rid of their cats, since I guess it helps clean the sound out.

Plus, if it's anything like my friend's Integera when he got rid of his cat, the car's going to smell horrible, like rotten eggs.

Oh and its illegal. Yes, in EVERY state even if they don't have inspection. Its a FEDERAL law. Will it still be cheaper if you get a ticket? When your city starts getting on the EPA dirty air list and you have to jump through all their hoops and are further restricted on how you can mod your car is it still going to be worth it?

Especially when you can get carsound high flow cats off ebay for under $60 each.

Yet. Give it time. the more people running !cats the quicker it'll happen. Then again, KS is like that due to the lack of population. The law can still ticket you for no cats. As I said, that is a federal law and precedes any state laws.

greed4speed what ur not accounting for is that if there are no emissions laws in a state like georgia and kansas nobody is goin to check and on top of that what cop will know the smell of no cat vs. poorly operating car?

Actually, having lived in OK I do understand. But, you'd be surpised. If the cop has a hair up his ... then he'll look for a reason to ticket. I've seen them do it. I also know there is a little sticker in your engine compartment that tells what emissions controls a car is supposed to be equipped with. It is all federally mandated and illegal to remove any of it IN ANY STATE even one's w/out emission testing or even no inspection. Pus if you cross state lines, they can still tag you because as stated before IT IS A FEDERAL LAW.

All it takes is one ticket to ruin your day and to make an ORY more costly than just running the cats.

Yeah, most cops won't smell a car with no cats, they'll hear a car with no cats. And instead of just giving you a ticket for a noise violation, they'll also give you a ticket for violating a federal law, which I believe costs $5,000 or something, but I might be wrong on the cost. A buddy of mine got pulled over by a cop and told "I don't even want to look under your car because this is the loudest Camaro I've ever heard" but let him go because he was really looking for drunk drivers. Even though Orlando and most of FL still don't have emissions inspections/laws, you can sure as hell get a ticket for it. Like a lot of tickets you can get, it's all about the cop pulling you over and whether or not his wife gave him head before work. Now that I've had cops give me the eye for how loud my car is even at idle, I would've like to at least have looked at getting some high flow cats. I still would've gone with the ORY, but you know, at least I would've considered the cats.

Funny, I live in Kalifornia and have no prob running "ILLEGAL" parts. All you have to do is change them back when its smog time. Dont be scared of the MAN.

For every guy modding his car there is 1 million who dont.
