what kind of gas milleage?????

I am trying to convince my friend that he drives his TA wrong.. he says he only gets 140 miles out of a tank.......i was like wtf your are running really rich ..... he said no he wasnt so i rode with him to see how he drives........he will shift his car at 1300 rpms to go to the next gear.

i was like wtf are you doing.....if you let it slowly run up to 2900 or 3000 then you will get better gas milleage, because when he goes to pass someone he gets on it. I told him that dumps fuel into the engine forceing him to get worse gas milleage as oppose to being in a lower gear and putting it a little of the way down (and that he would accelerate at the same rate with less gas)

he also says that on average in the city an a4 gets better gas milleage than an m6...........i was like i dont think so (help me out cause i do have an a4 as you can see by my sig..........am i right by saying he is being ****ing STUPID).....

what is your input.........................m6 guys what kind of milleage do you get in the city???? i get 250 miles to a tank
thanks

EDIT: **** i meant 250 miles to a tank..........lol typo fixed

Re: what kind of gas milleage?????

what? i think you misread something...

i typically get 400 miles out of a tank on the highway...27mpg doing 75-80 with the windows down.

even with my around town driving i'm getting 300

not so sure about reving all the way to 3000 and getting better milage...i'd beleive 2000 or so...which is about what i do.

Yup, I go to ~2k rpm and shift.

Get around 22 mpg mix got 20 mpg w/all in town driving and average 28 mpg hiway. Thats still with my driving. I get on it every now and then.

Re: what kind of gas milleage?????

I was getting 225 per tank in town. Now after the tune up and FRA mod I get right at 275 to a tank.

Re: what kind of gas milleage?????

An Automatic will most likely get better MPG in town since it knows how to shift, but it will fall 1 or 2 MPG short on the freeway due to the lack of a higher gear. Take 6th out of the equation and they should all be equal.

Re: what kind of gas milleage?????

I usually shift around 1500 RPM for normal driving and 2500 if I need a little more power. I get about 23-25 MPG in town doing that, so your friend must really be pushing on the gas pedal at those low RPMs to see that kind of bad gas milage.

yeah he does get on it in the lower rpm range this is what i was trying to say. Sorry for the incoherent rambling, i wasnt all there when i was trying to prove to him that if he drove like i told him too that he would get better gas milleage.

Re: what kind of gas milleage?????

I don't know if I need a tune up or not but I'm getting like 225 miles per tank. I always try to shift into 4th after 1st gear also. hmmm any ideas on what the problem could be????

Your problem: "I always try to shift into 4th after 1st gear also."

Re: what kind of gas milleage?????

Yea it would be a problem if I stomped on the gas after shifting into 1st but i don't. i got 250miles on my last tank....so who knows...im gonna check my plugs and probably change them. any suggestions on what kinda of plugs?

Re: what kind of gas milleage?????

I get any where between 18 - 25 mpg in city driving and close to 28 - 30 mpg on the freeway. I use that gas price web site to track my mpg and fuel costs. Average about 250 - 280 miles per tank. Not bad at all for me.

Re: what kind of gas milleage?????

I get about 380-410 depending on my mood

On a typical trip that i used to make 2 times a month (150 miles) i would be about 5/8th of a tank full when i got to the desitnation...sometimes I drove that trip and back and didnt have to fill er up

You're still forcing your car to accelerate while in pretty low RPM. You don't have to be stomping the gas to be lugging your engine. If you shift out of 1st to 4th at 2k rpm you're taking your engine out of its power band and taking away any mechanical advantage gearing gave it which makes the engine's job more difficult which consumes more fuel. The only other way would be to bring 1st up to 3k+ then shift, but then you're still wasting fuel by raising the RPM up so high. Thats why I got rid of skip shift as soon as I could.

When I skip gears its because I've gotten to a certain speed with lower gears and I only go into a higher gear because I'll be cruising at a steady RPM not accelerating. Skipping more than 1 gear while still accelerating even at light throttle is not beneficial. Try 1-2-4 or 1-3-4 and see if you notice a difference. I prefer 1-2-4. Use all the mechanical advantages of lower gearing while accelerating then drop it down in RPM while cruising.

I know my car got its best milage (30 mpg) while cruising @ ~2000 RPM (85 mph in New Mex). Would have been more but I did a nice 125 mph run on that tank too. When I got into TX, I had to drop to 75 and my MPG dropped. This tells me the LS1 is more efficient at that higher RPM for that gear.
