I have a 2000 Z automatic and i am confused about what driveshaft my car comes with. Steel or alum.?

 

2.73 Cars come with steel. Everything else is aluminum.


If you can select 1st gear, you have aluminum.

 

My car originally came w/2.73's (steel ds) and I could select 1st gear.

 

Mikael, you're thinking about LT1 cars with 3.23's. AFAIK, all LS1 cars have a selectable 1st gear (I know for sure that I can shift into 1st since I've got the A4 w/2.73's). Also, I can confirm having a steel driveshaft, and I agree that the aluminum d.s. comes with 3.23 geared A4's, and also M6's.

 

Look for these codes on the inside of your drivers door, in the door jam.

GU2 = 2.73 gear ratio and 2 piece steel drive shaft
GU5 = 3.23 gear ratio and 1 piece aluminum drive shaft

 

2 piece driveshaft?? I only see 1 tube?!

 

I stand corrected. I guess only the V6s were two pieces.
