The price is pretty good, how good is the converter?

 

A lot of people don't think to highly of them. They aren't made that great. I would suggest a Yank or a Vig.

There is a reason why all the big boys of the LS1 sites use either of those 2 brands.

But then again there are happy people with TCI

 

I didn't think TCI was that great, but it seem a lot of people are starting to buy them now?

I can get one shipped here for $500, that's pretty dam good.

I've a been looking at Mid West and TCS too.

I agree that the performance of TCI converters in the past has been less than impressive. They have made some radical changes to their converters, especially the LS1 converters, and they're REALLY performing well! You have guys and girls pulling low 1.6x 60' times with the Super Street Fighter 3500 and low 1.5x 60' times with stock-internals, a full raceweight, and the TCI Competition 4,400! We have been so impressed with their performance that we're now carrying them at our shop. I will be trying one out shortly after I finish the heads/cam setup and bolt on the TNT nitrous kit. Mid-10's should be easy.

Everyone I talk to down here doesn't have very good things to say about TCI, plus they don't give a very good warranty.

How many people are running the new TCI converter's.

I just don't want it to be one of those you get what you pay for things.

 

Try the Vigs if the Yanks are too much for you.
Making a decision on a part like this that could affect your transmission, deserves some super credible reputation. I would be too afraid to use TCI with their past reputation.

Also Yanks vary in range from $750-$1000, plus often you'll find GPs on them that lowers the price even more.

 

I can definitely understand your concern. This is typically a mod that people only want to do once (unless you completely change the setup), so it's only natural for you to be leary. This is why I am going to try one in my car. I do not want to sell something that I have not personally tried on my car! It will be a few months before I can get the converter swapped in since we're getting ready to tear the car apart for a few mods , but I will definitely post up as soon as it is in and I have results.

Also keep in mind that every shop has its testing phases when they first start producing a converter for a certain transmission. I was a guinea pig for Yank converters back in 1999 and 2000 when I still had my '98 T/A. Not all converters were successful and worth keeping. I remember trying an Ultra Yank 4200 that had mediocre results at best. Yank's converters today are excellent performers, but they had to do some testing to get to that point. TCI is no different. They've already done some testing with their latest converters, and the results have been stellar!

Converter choice's need to be well thought out, it something you don't want to mess with...spending big dollars is one thing but spending small dollars on on something that is vital to your car is another thing...spend the extra money and get something of quality, performance and workmanship. After thinking about converters for a while I went and got a SY3500 because a friend has one in his car and loves it. Talk to people who own a TCI and find out what they think...start a thread on LS1tech and ask question over there...IMO, the SY3500 is a very streetable converter with all the performance...the 1.6 str is great for both the street and the track..and your tranny which is most important...good luck and take your time.
