What to do with $2500?

I know there are threads like this all the time but I need some opinions on whats best for what I use my car for.

I do not go to the track. Lucky if I go once a year. Not a big numbers person. I just want more umph. I drive around town mosty but there are quite a few roads around here with highway level speed limits.

The TA in my sig has an air lid and a cutout. 273 gears.

I just dont want to waste this money and be disappointed.

Im open for everything but forced induction(Which i cant do for that price anyway) and Nitrous.

Gears, Cam, Headers its all open game just dont know whats best for a around town car. Thanks guys.

Re: What to do with $2500?

I've got a 2000 Z-28 and just spent around the same price for mods. I have never taken it to the track, not a big #'s person either, but I think we are on the same page. You could go with a cat back exhaust, I hear GMMG has an awesome sound but is pricey. Mabie a set of headers and a y-pipe, I am under the impression that you want to leave the emissions system alone. I have just learned an expensive lesson. There is a lot of researching that goes into buying a set of headers. Check the threads around here and read up on people's comments about headers. Kooks, Pacesetter and Hooker seem to be good choices. Go long tube or don't go at all The Borla adjustable cat back is like a cut out, I have it and I think it sounds nice.

Roller rockers are relatively easy to install and make their share of power.
LS1's respond well to mods so whatever you do I don't think you will be disappointed. I am on my first LS1 (2 1/2 years), so I am also relitively new to this myself, but I did got automotive tech-school so I know my way around under the hood. Make a long story short- I'd say, Exhaust, rear supension (TQ-arm and LCA's) and roller rockers, non adjustable seeing as you don't strike me as a hard core 1/4 miler. That'd make around 50hp---roughly----Hope I could help. Have fun.

For 2500 bucks? I need the number to your parts store

If it were my money, I'd save toward FI, but since you already stated your adversion to FI, I'd say Torque Converter (along with cooler), Gears and LT/ORY. You can easily do those with the funds you have and it would be a totally different car. Happy Spending!!

Alright so maybe a few dollars more than $2,500....but heads and cam packages have definitely come waaaay down in price. If you do the work yourself, you can definitely do a h/c package for under 2K and be under the 2,500 mark with headers as well. Gear sets aren't terribly expensive as well...though thinking about it, keeping the 10 bolt with h/c probably isn't the greatest idea.

For about $700 more, you can get a rear mounted turbo(STS). That turbo will bring you to about 470HP!! That would do more than all the "bolt ons" put together! I wish I knew about that before I spent the $$ on the other stuff!

Re: What to do with $2500?

I say...
  • 3.73 Gears
  • 10 Bolt TA Girdle w/ Stud Kit
  • LT Headers / ORY
  • LS6 Intake
  • ~3200 Torque Converter
  • Drag Radials

That setup would be very streetable yet still be quite noticeable. I've spent nearly what your budget is over the past month stockpiling mod's to put on mine before Spring Although a cam kit will soon be added to the list...I'm with you on your thinking... I don't go to the track too often but I really want something that can hold its own on the street.

Re: What to do with $2500?

Ive heard not to do the STS turbo on an auto? Is this a bunch of crap ive been hearing then?

Only concern I have is like I stated before i never go to the track so im gonna be running street tires cause my wallets not that deep to pay for drag radials that only last 15k or something. Im afraid that with that much power on steet tires any time i get on it at all going less than 40 im gonna go up in smoke.(Only reason I dont buy a Stall right now is im just unsure of when I will even get to take advantage of the thing.)

Re: What to do with $2500?

Remember, a turbo is boost, you dont have ALL the power instantly. Look at the Grandma car, Grand national, they are very well street mannered. Please, I wasn't bashing the GN. That brings me to another point, auto w/ turbo, good! It keeps the boost up b/n shifts.

Re: What to do with $2500?

Hooker or PaceSetter LongTubes (about $420 for hookers)
Hooker OffRoad Y-Pipe ($170)
Magnaflow Catback or SLP Loudmouth (sound sweet and rather cheap)
3200 Stall from TCI (rather cheap, work great and awesome Customer Service)
B&M Super Cooler (around $60-$70 bucks)
3.42 or 3.73 Gears (about $195)
Ported T/B (about $60)
and Tuning!

and maybe a LS6 Intake..
