Surface rust will just happen, it's a byproduct of heat in non-stainless steel. Then integrity of the header should never degrade for all intents and purposes, and if it does, there was something wrong with the header.
I was just about to say the same thing! I think this coated/stainless thing is overrated. It`s interesting. I just replaced the original stock uncoated, non-stainless exhaust on my `95 Z28 (which I just sold). I also now need to replace my `95 Firehawk`s stainless original exhaust. Both failed at the exact same time. Don`t get me wrong: the SLP exhaust still looks beautiful, and when polished is like new. But all of the hangers, bolts, and clamps have rusted to the point that they are brittle and snapping apart.
I was convinced of going with coated/stainless headers, but the more I consider it, I may just go with painted ones.

Correct me if im wrong but doesn't ceramic coating allow for much cooler underhood temperatures compared to bare/painted headers.

I wouldn't say MUCH cooler, maybe 5-10 degrees. The ceramic is more for extreme temperatures, like hot lapping your car at 6000 RPMS for a few passes around a track. The headers with ceramic coating are less likely to crack from heat stress. They're also shiny and pretty.

Thumbs up Re: What are the best headers out there?

Get ceramic coated Pacesetter, Hooker, etc or stainless steel if you can afford the ridiculous prices. I just couldn't justify the cost of SS headers for a mildly modded street driven only car. I can buy two sets of ceramic coated mild steel headers for the price of one SS set.
