What am I doing wrong? track times
First time I ever went to the track I ran consistent 14.5 @ 99 mph with a 97 SS (sorry I don't have the 60' times). And I was barley beating a friend of mine (his first time too) that has a 2000 SS. I'm pretty sure it is the tires though, probably our driving too. I'm running Kuhmo 712's and my buddy is using Goodyear somethings, probably the factory one's since it only has 20k. But before I bought this car I owned a '86 Z with a 305, so I guess I'm kind of used to being able to just smash the peddle to the floor. But it didn't seem like I was spinning the tires much. I see everyone else with LS1's are running around 13.5's and better, with LT1's a little behind. I know my friends LS1 isn't slow, he's kind of PO'ed about the times but I've been in the car plenty of times when he's chirp the tires going into third. So do you think it is the tires and how we launch? BTW both cars M6's.

We don't wanna hear any whining about how your LT1 got
by a bunch of LS1's, 'cause that's life!!!

Thanks a lot D*ck face. If you read my post it concerns both cars. My buddy has never owned anything except for a truck before this. Is this how you treat everybody that want's to start going to the track but sucks at it and just want's some advice.

...........I didn't think you'd take it seriously with all the goofy "smilies"!?
In regards to your question then, I'd say you need lots of practise with the launch, 'cause I'll guarantee that with the 6-speed, that's where your biggest problem is (especially if your buddy has never really driven sports before). Even with an automatic, I had to work on my launch, and on the same night I ran 13.4, I also ran 14.1 because I spun too much off the line
. Obviously shifting quickly is important too, but hopefully the M6 guys can give you some more tips on effective launching
(from what I've heard, you've gotta rev to about ~2000 rpm, then ease out the clutch and even slip it a little bit until the tires hook up, then let it loose!
After that, it's pedal-to-the-metal, and only let off the gas momentarily when you do your shifts).HTH

BTW: I'm not sure what your 60' times were, but the 60' time is about the most important measure to determine how well you're launching. Try to cut them down to at least 2.2's, but 2.1's or 2.0's should get you into the 13's no prob..........especially your buddy's LS1
.

If you are running street tires (which you are), try to avoid the water, and do not do a burn out. All you have to do is rid the tires of water, clean them off. Dont launch at a high RPM, take off at idle, then next time try launching at 1500 RPM. Play with it..Good luck..
people are gonna talk **** about my time, but this was my first time going to the track without any proper shifting methods besides shifting at 5000 rpm.
heres what i did and pulled in a 13.96...
i launched at 2000 rpm, but babied the clutch up
i didn't dump it because the time before i did and i lost too much traction and received a 14.7...
i shifted at 5000 rpm safely (i was obviously learning how to drive) and let go at the end...
like the dood before me said, launches mean everything
try working it to 2500 and baby it from there, if u lose too much traction try 2300, then 2000. do it until u get a clean hook and then start shifting at 5500+-
gl!

What were the track conditions. Altitude and temp. will play an important role. I used to live in NM where the altitude was over 5,000 ft. It makes a huge difference. Stock my SS ran a 14.1 in New Mexico at altitude, when I got to Texas at near sea level it ran a 13.5 still stock.
With street tires launching at or over 2000 RPM is just going to make you spin and slow you down. Practice "rolling" into your throttle. You should be running 13.5-13.2 bone stock on normal street tires. And try not shifting until 5100 - 5200 but do not hit your rev limiter or that will slow you down as well. I believe the rev limiter is 5800 or 5900 stock.

My first time to the track in my old LS1 I ran a 13.50 on the limiter in every gear. The tach is so far off, it helps to touch the limiter for a split second to figure out where not to shift
That same day, I worked it down into the 12s. Just got my 60' down into the 1.9-2.0 range.Once you figure out your shift points, work on your 60'. Even with a crappy 60' time, you should be pulling a lot more MPH out of your car. Getting your shift points up should get your MPH back up.
As far as the guy with the LT1, my '96 Formula ran 14.0@98 consistently on street tires with a Borla catback/cold air. I'm no expert driver, but was running 2.0 60' times. On a cold day, I ran a 13.80@102 with the same 2.0 60'.
