Weekend car oil change interval?

My Z28 is my weekend and sunny day "fun" car, so I don't put a lot of mileage on it. When it is driven, it's driven hard (but with love ).

I use Mobil1 synthetic oil and change it every 2000 miles. Too soon? Well, it takes me a year to put that kind of mileage on my car. My oil still looks clean after the year is up.

Should I change my oil more or less frequently? If I change it every 6 months, that's 1000 miles.

Thanks all!

I think its fine.. We are dealing with more sophisticated engines and better lubes.

I put that 1-2K miles in about 1 month..

Bought new in August of 02.. I now have 18k miles on the clock.. hehe

Change it once a year. I drive about 8300 miles a year and change mine twice. I also use synthetic. It's Redline, but I doubt that makes a difference.

I'd say once every 6-8 months.

I am in the same situation as you, but put a few more miles on the car then you. I use mobile 1 also. I shoot for changing oil every three months but ends up being every 4-5. You should be okay with every 6 months. Not really the miles that will kill the oil, it is the time breaking down all the additives in the oil that get us, the ones who don't get to enjoy our cars as much as we should.

drive your 4500 miles or 6months (whichever comes first)

We drive our SS very little and it goes into storage for the winter months.
I change the oil when I get it out each year. That's enough!! Any more is just wasting money and good oil.

I would do it every 3 months in your case, since 3k miles will not come first...the oil can start to break down after 3 months...hence the 3 month/3kmile change schedule.

Then you'd better watch out what oil you buy in the store. It could be on the shelf for more than 3 months and be all broken down before you put it in your motor.
Do you actually believe that oil breaks down over time??
Then they should have dates on the bottles "must be used by"
What about all of the time that the oil spends in the holding tanks before they bottle it up?
The only reason that the oil change interval posted on the little sticker that they put on your windshield says 3000 or 3 months is to get your money.
The 3 months is for the little old lady that drives her car 1.3 miles to the store every day but never warms the motor up causing a build up of moisture and acids.
An occasionally driven car that is thoroughly warmed up every time that it is driven is in no danger at all.

I wasn't referring to oil that is sitting in bottles. I was referring to oil that is in the car as it sits/gets driven for 3 months. Once the oil is inside the motor doing it's job, then it can begin to break down after 3 months. The SYNTHETIC oils say you can go many more miles w/ their oil, but I'm just a maintenance finatic and have mine done every 3k miles or 3 months....using Mobil 1 Syn of course

You missed my point. Oil does NOT break down, never, ever.
Oil gets dirty, contaminated, the additive package wears out.
But oil never just sits around and goes bad.

If oil broke down we would have to change the oil in differential every three months. I've had cars that I have owned for 10 years and never changed the differential oil.

I also used to own a boat that sat for two years one time and the gasoline ran just fine. As long as the gasoline isn't mixed with air it will be fine for long periods of time as well.

Ok, I stand corrected But still, I'd change it every 3 months.
