Warning SLP cold air kit

Spring 2005, I justed install hypertech, 3:42 gears (in Auto 2002 Z28) and the SLP cold air kit, I drove the car for one week and enjoyed the new feel of power, I then let my loveing wife take over as the weather was very wet. I got the call at 2m that after driving through a flooded gutter that the car wouldn't start. I told her STOP!! call a tow truck and I'll check it out when I get home. After pulling plugs and turning the engine over I though ok it will live, I installed new plugs ,oil, filter and proceeded to start her up. The wales and crying (from me) could be heard for miles. When I pulled the starter there it was a rod haning out the side of the block. My beware is remember to not drive through flooded gutters with the SLP as it puts the intake only several inches from the pavement. she sured sucked the water in.

14 months later my loving wife purchased a new Ls6 crate motor for me, (The screams of joy could be heard for blocks) of course I purchased JBA headers, SLP Y pipe and a Flowmaster exhaust. I will get them installed in the next two weeks and I'm hopeing to get that full 405 hp it's rated for. Since it's a CA car I choose these parts to be able to pass the swiffer test.
Its been awhile since I last posted (member since 1998) but had to share the info and would be grateful for any input on combo and install.
Thanks 30AZ28

I need to know about the proper computor programer, what gaskets to buy and what do do to the trans. The car had 54,000 hwy miles new rear end 12,000 miles. Yes I kicked myself for not telling my wife not to drive through flooded gutters.

Wow its really hard to imagine that it sucked up water! REALLY hard to. I've heard of vacuum suction tests done to simulate that on SSRA's and all the results showed enough open space for the intake to suck air elsewhere and not cause lift even at wot.

You can run the stock programming and you don't "need" to do anything to the trans. If you keep the Hypertech then don't install the power tuning just use it to program for the different rear gears, fan settings, rpm limiter, speed limiter, and shift points.
The very best thing that you could do would be take it to a shop and get it dyno tuned. Any and all mail order tunes are like playing battleship. Occasionaly you'll get a hit, sometimes you'll get close, but it's mostly misses.

If he's ordering an LS6, than he needs either an LS6 PCM modified to work with his A4 or to have his PCM flashed with the tables from the LS6. Anyone with EFI Live or HPTuners and a little know-how could do either (preferably the latter). Timing, fueling and various other tables are somewhat different. Will it run with the stock '02 Z28 system? Probably. But, it sure won't get the 405hp it's rated at. I've looked at both tunes so many times, it's amazing how different they are. Then again, the motors aren't exactly identicle.

Re: Warning SLP cold air kit

I just completed the swap and here is a review.
3 days work, balancer, valve covers on ls6 different, used old ones. Intake had 1/4" of dried mud in it, cleaned and reused. purchased a 180 t stat wouldn't fit used the one on ls6. Jba headers no problem, slp y-pipe not the best fit, flowmasters 2" short and rub on gas tank heat shield.
Trouble codes p0507, IAC it idles at 1550- 2000 drives itself. p1258 ? still looking that one up.
Costs
ls6 motor $5500
install with other mods $2000
headers, y pipe and exhaust @ $1500
misc gaskets oil filters antifreeze $200
$9200 and it still won't run. I need to get a computor reprogram, new mas, throdle body. I wonder if the bbk 1709 TB with a jet Mas will do? anothers $750 =+ program. Glad I got a great bonus but I've truely shown my love for my Z

women will find a way to break anything dear to us men. At least he has a loving wife that makes up for her airhead mistakes (no disrespect intended to your wife)

Good luck getting that all set up and running, keep us up to date!

Do you have any idea how much more motor and power you could have had for the same money with a budget LS1 build????

Smile Re: Warning SLP cold air kit

The motor was unrebuildable hole in block and crack down side. For a crate ls1 $2000 more, a ebay motor was 4 to 5 k. The cost is high but now a new motor and my z runs and after last mods I'll post dino results. Thanks for all the response, I should have spent more time in research at this site but that would have delayed me getting the car running.

so if any exhaust is better than stock the magnaflow would still be a step up. id rather have that 5HP instead of not having it.

Re: Warning SLP cold air kit

Just changed IAC and car runs great. In reguard to exhaust I just want to put the stock Y-pipe on a wall of Chevy shame. Its is the most restrictive I've ever seen. I will get the breakin done and then find a shop that can retune the computor and let you know dino (dyno) #'s
Thanks for your imput.
