VIN for LS1 equiped chevy

I want to buy an LS1 from a salvaged car, or the entire car. Is their a way to identify which cars were equiped with LS1 engines, or from the model, or some other code??

All C5 (97-04) Vette's & 98+ V8 f-bodies have an LS1, with slight variations in cam, injectors, EGR system, and internal block design, for starters. The 01 & 02 f-bodies had the latest enhancements. If you intend to seriously race the motor, consider an LQ4 iron block motor from a truck. Might be cheaper and will hold up to lots of power. A guy around here is running one putting out 700+ hp on the juice, with a 10 flat at the track.

Try doing a search for the different years and get your best deal.

You can find out quite a bit from the VIN# including which engine it came with. Click here for VIN# breakdown.

If you're pulling an LS1 out of a Camaro, I'm pretty sure there will be a G in the VIN number. I think no other Camaros (or Firebirds) have a G in their VIN except for LS1-equipped models.

Yeah, it's the eighth digit, the second digit is also a G but that represents it is a GM vehicle.
