vibration @ 100+ mph

im getting this problem on the highway in 6th gear from whati can notice. but i think i feel it when i speed up onto the high from 4th gear through 6th. at around 80 constant i feel a little vibration but then kinna smooths out when i give the car more gas then at 100+ it gets really bad. what can this problem be. im spending more $$$ just trying to solve it.

things ive done to solve problem:
1. balanced driveshaft and got new u-joints $150.00
2. got the rear end checked for the 4.10's for backlash. $100.00
3. rebalanced wheels several times (3times) $48.00
4. got a alignment done. $140.00

anything a should get replaced or fixed?
1. tranny mount?
2. new drive shaft? this one is going to be expensive and may not help my problem though.

any help will be great. this car stuff gets real frustating . not being able to drive the car the way its meant to be drove

thanks in advance sorry so long just getting fed up with this problem

Re: vibration @ 100+ mph

Pinion angle might be off a bit.

Tranny mount might be broken, letting the rear of the tranny rise a little under high speed load, putting the driveshaft in a bind.

JohnD might be on track, if you have lowered this rig, it could possiblly be that the pinion angle is off, this happened to me on a 71 chevy truck i had lowered, yrs ago, I tryed a lot of things, and asked all kinds of old hot rodders, but finally a mechanic friend, and race car driver that I crew for, figured it out after i told him the symtoms, and we fixed it in a 1/2 hr, so this is a easy check.

Could also be a bent wheel.

I had a similar problem with my 96 SS. GM switched out everything including giving me new rims. Never cured it. Traded in the car for a new 98 back then

Re: vibration @ 100+ mph

thanks for the info guys,

ill be checcking the tranny mount this weekend but i dont know how to check for pinion angle.

as the rims the rims are true. had them checked and there fine. even got them balanced several times and got the alignment.

selling the car? really can do that. i wish but tomuch time and $$$ spent to just throw it all away.

hope the tranny mount is the prob..

I have the same problem...I start feeling it around 100mph before I approach the traps. No idea what it is though....the drone from the vibration is incredibly loud.

My car does that too. Its not the tranny mount though, becouse mine broke and during hard acceleration it made a horrible continual thud. I replaced it. It could be a tire with a broken belt. Balancing usually doesnt take care of that and it will be more predominant at different mph.

Re: vibration @ 100+ mph

Its a steel belt inside the tire. When they brake they arn't visibly noticable, but causes vibration at different speeds. If its in the front sometimes it will cause vibration in the steering wheel. Balancing does not help this. You just have to stick it out till its time to buy new tires. Good luck.

Re: vibration @ 100+ mph

could just be harmonic vibration... same thing that happens when you drive at 20mph in 4th gear.

it could be one or both of your axles.

Re: vibration @ 100+ mph

Another thought about the tires, when you had them balanced was the shop's balancing machine able to check the roadforce of the tires? A tire with excessive roadforce will balance out good but there is still a 'heavy spot' in the tire(s) and cause a vibration. I've ran into this several times, sometimes the tire can be rotated on the rim and sometimes the tire needs to be replaced to fix the problem. HTH

the easy way to find out if it is the tires/wheels or not, would be to rotate the tires front to back and see if the vibration follows.
