swap

i havent seen it personally with an ls1 but guy i know did it with a v6 to lt1 ( 95 i think it was) time consuming as any tranny, engine, and computer swap would be. he also upgraded the rear at the same time tho. seemed to go smooth for him. his biggest headache was the mounts which i dont know if they were suppose to line up or not but had to move them ever so slightly, but that may have been his f' up. he made life easier by using an above ground hydraulic lift and a tranny jack.

If you have a v6, sell it and buy an LS1.

Unless you have lots of mechanical experience, can weld, can fabricate, and already have a complete LS1 then it will be cheaper to sell your car and buy a car with an LS1 already in it.

Here's a thread in the V6 forum about swapping in different engines.

That's the conclusion that is usually drawn unless you plan on swapping it yourself and get a good deal on the engine.

Yes I do have a complete ls1 car and alot of time on my hands, so I figure time and money will be on my side, plus saving on that damn high risk insurance also. Thanx to all who has helped out so far.

Remember that forum.

You can do it - it will be a little pain in the butt - but is definitely possible. And if you already have the LS1 car it will definitely be cheaper than buying one - especially considering that you can't sell a V6 Camaro for more than what - $2000 tops?

Main thing that's gonna help you is just trying to get everything good and together before putting it in the car. Just lift the front end high enough to drop the engine, tranny, k-member from the bottom and slide it out, then the same thing back in.

You will need the LS1 k-member, so you are gonna be best off doing it the same way out of the LS1 into the V6. You are gonna have to do some custom work on the tranny crossmember/mounts.

Magnus' site will help you quite a bit. Speartech (sponsor at LS1Tech.com) can help you with your wiring harness.

Good Luck.

You ever wreck that car, and when the insurance company sees its not a six banger you will lose all coverage. You have to tell them it isnt a 6 popper (I think most ask if there are any "racing" or engine modifications done to a car, or ask if there is more than 1k in work done to a car)

I would think the only hard part aside from fabbing up then engine mounts, is getting the wiring right. I would almost say that the harnesses are going to be largely incompatable, being both a different year, and iteration of the cars.

Oh, and to use the LS1 Air intake/box on the radiator support you are going to have to drop the LS1 nose on the car... it wont fit under the hood of a 93-97 car.

As for the crossmember problem, the 96 camaro was already a 5-speed, and the ls1 donar car is a 6-speed. So hopefully not much fabbing will hafta be done. and for the wiring, as I have said I have a complete donar car with everything complete rearend, gastank,motor-trans, computer-harness and all. So wish me luck guys I'm starting on the nextweek or so.

I have a friend that swapped a 1999 LS1, transmission, computer, and motor into his 1995 firebird, and did same to a 1996 Formula. If you serious, ill give u his email tyo ask questions if you run into any problems.
