Used dounut for first time!!!
Get this. Got the car (99 Z) about a month and a half ago. About 2 weeks ago, I spent $2400 dollars on rims and tires. And tonight (for the first time in my life I might add) hit something in the road and split the tire all the way to the rim.
Anyway my question is, after about 10 minutes of driving on the spare tire, w/ a speed of no more then 50, the ASR off light, brake light, and ABS inop lights came on. Does anybody know the reason for this? After I cut the car off when I got home and turned it back on they had gone off. (I figured it reset the computer). Anyway just wondering whats the reason for this.

The spare tire has a smaller diameter than your regular tire. Because of this, your spare tire will be spinning faster than the other three tires to maintain the same speed. Your ASR system looks for a 3mph difference before it activates, this is why the ASR light came on. The ABS system under braking will look for a speed difference as well, so this light will come on while you're running the spare tire. The brake light for the same reason.
Don't worry. I had 8 flat tires in 2.5 years while I was living in Flint, MI (very very bad neighborhood) and every time that I drove on the spare tire at like 55mph those same lights would come on.

Whatever you do, just don't put the dounut on the rear. If you get a flat tire on the rear, take a good tire from the front and swap it to the rear. Put the dounut on the front.
This will save your rear end.

well thanks for the info.....but it was a little late. I only drove it for about 10 min. and mostly under 40 MPH. But I got a new tire on today. Next time it happens in the rear I will take everybody's advice.


OK< I'm going to sound like an idiot here, but why would putting the donut on the rear trash the rear end? I mean, the posi is designed to allow the rear wheels to turn at different speeds, right?
Or maybe, because they are turning at different speeds, it is sending too much power to one side and screws something up in the process.
I dunno .... I just drive 'em.
