Underdrive pullies

I was wondering are underdrive pullies worth having or should i just stick with original? I have a 98 SS 6speed with exahaust, wisper lid and granitelli maf no other mods what you guys think? And do they have any other problems that go with them if I do decide to go for them?

Re: Underdrive pullies

it's hard to say if they are worth it....boils down to what you want out of the car.

they probably won't give you any felt gains, real world probably 5hp and 5-10#s of torque. you may feel the car rev a bit faster, but that is probably subjective.

if you are looking for big hp...save your money. if you are looking for some simple, do-at-home mods for a little more zip in your car...go for it.

I think sell the MAF, put the stocker back on and take that $ plus the cash you'd spend on the pulley and do some exhaust mods.

Personally, I have no use for underdrive pulleys. What little you gain from them takes away from cooling the engine since you aren't spinning the water pump as fast. Since I put the ATI kit on, cooling has become an issue.

Re: Underdrive pullies

If you want pullies, I say get them. Every little bit helps I guess. After I put mine on, I did notice it rev a little quicker, but as far as performance gain, I'm not sure if I gained anything. I haven't had a problem with it messing up my battery or anything like some of the guys on the board have. But I agree with above, definetly do exhaust mods before you do this mod.

I'm not 100% certain about the F-bodies, but on the Corvettes it gives quite a few more rwhp for just a simple little crank pulley. (Around 8-10 rwhp)

Re: Underdrive pullies

All of them are basically proven to add from the range of 1-10 HP and TQ. Why pay money for that amount of minimal when there are MANY side effects:

Hotter AC
Increased Emissions
Harder Steering
Battery Voltage Lowered
Less Coolant Circulation

Doesnt seem worth it to me.....

I haven't had any side affects with mine.

The irony is that nearly every "bolt-on" offers minimal gains, and a bunch of them have many negative side effects. Headers? What a list of cons associated with them!

My headers have kinda been a pain in the a$$. The bolts have backed out 4 times so far, and I have wasted a Header Gasket I just ordered some stage 8 lockers so hopefully that will take care of that.

Re: Underdrive pullies

Depending on what youre going to do and what you want out of the car that is up to you....i will say every little bit does add up but its not the biggest gain for the buck...headers will be your best bet, headers ory and your looking at a better power band and about 20hp, since you have 98 consider an ls6 manifold as well especially if you plan on throwing a cam cuz you will need the larger plenum volume of the ls6 manifold and the benefit of the headers to maximise your cam swap
