Question Underdrive Pulley question

Hey guys, I have a 2001 Camaro Z28. The only thing I've really done to it performance wise is gotten a K&N intake.

I came across a guy at work who said he had just gotten rid of his 2002 and had some parts that he had no use for and would sell cheap. One of them is a power programmer which i'll probably pick up for about $40 and the other was an underdrive pulley. I don't know much about this part and wonder if it is worth the upgrade. What are the benefits? Any Cons? How hard is the install? And what would be a good price? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Justin

What programmer? Might benefit a little since you have an A4 - and if it was returned to stock before he sold the car.

I'm calling him back tonight on the programmer. I'm hoping it's the HyperTech Power Programmer III. I've heard good things and I've found it will work on my 2001 (which was a concern because he didn't know seeing he had an '02). I'm sure there are several things I can improve with it... but one thing right off is I think I should be able to remove the top speed limiter which was stock because of the stock tires (for those rare occasions) ;-)

P.S. And if he didn't return it to stock before he sold the car? Any concerns there?

HPP is a piece of garbage.

A decent underdrive pulley (ASP, etc) is around $200 new. You'll probably pick up around 7rwhp. Bad idea if you're buying it new.

Damn, not good to hear... please elaborate. How is HPP garbage? I've not done a lot of modification to my car so far and the HPP was always too much to be worth spending. Really, all I want to do is remove the top speed limiter and play with the other options. I talked to the guy and I'm getting it for $50 and we are testing it on my car first.... he's giving me the ASP pulley for nothing because he says he has no use for it now.

And you'll also render your alternator and A/C useless at idle, you're battery will constantly be 'barely' charged. You could then remove these systems completely, think of how much weight you could save.
Seriously though, removing my underdrive pulley was the best thing I have ever done in my entire life to date.

Haha... after more research, i'm guessing it won't work. We'll see, i'll ask him later today.

Wow!!

Met the guy... found out he didn't sell his car, but he said he returned it to stock on the HPP, after I voiced concern about this issue... I plugged it up to the car to test it and a "Not for this vehicle" message came up. Whatever. Glad I tested it first.

The kicker, on the phone before we met is the first time I brought up this concern. He assured me his vehicle had been returned to stock and he knew all about the fact that only one vehicle could be used at a time . I met him 5 minutes later and the first words out of his mouth were that I'm sorry, I called Jeggs and they don't even make a programmer for the 2001.. We tested it, got the message and thanks but no thanks. Why couldn't he just admit he didn't know this and saved us both the time. Like he had time to call Jeggs and Hypertech in the five minutes before I saw him...

From what i know about programmers you cant use it on your car once its used on another car meaning HPP. The pulley if you can get it cheap is a good mod i had it on my 93Z and had no issues ofcourse LS1's are a bit different and you might have problems but there are plenty of people that like them and plenty that dont.
