Ultimate LS1 Heads (apparently)

I was flipping through the July 2004 issue of Hot Rod and in the test and tune section they had an article regarding AFR's new heads for the LS1. The specs on the head are a 205cc IPV, 2.020in IVS, 1.600in EVS, and a 66cc CV. Swapping these heads onto a stock LS1 netted 37hp and 43lb-ft. HRM also swapped on a Comp Cams stick measuring 224/224@0.050 tappet lift. With both mods in place, the cam swap added another 49hp and leaving the peak torque at 469lb-ft (while adding significant gains in other areas of the curve). It made 507hp thanks to nothing but a cam and head swap.
I didn't know wheter or not you guys knew about a combo like this already, but I just wanted to bring it to your attention.

I don't know if there is a dyno chart online for that particular motor...there is a dyno chart printed in the Hot Rod article though. I can try and replicate it if you would like.

Re: Ultimate LS1 Heads (apparently)

I don't have a scanner, sorry. I'm not sure if those are the heads or not...the article did not mention what model of AFR heads they were...just basically listed those numbers. The February 2004 issue of Hot Rod went over the initial relase and the July article was the 1st real test of the heads.

No other mods than the heads and cam? What about headers, intake/airbox, exhaust? Is this RWHP or BHP?

The article was a real short one...no specifics on the dyno or hp measurement were given. You're gonna have to look up the Hot Rod July 04 mag.

Specifically designed for 1995 to present Gen-3 Chevy Corvettes, Camaros
gotta love it when sellers haven't the slightest idea what they are selling...

Also, it HAS to be fly-wheel HP. Given the 507hp final number. Subtracting the gains from the cam and heads gives 507-86=421hp. First off, if you're starting with an LS1 and it benchmarks at 421 flywheel hp, you've got a real runner to start with. Maybe an odd LS6, but not an LS1.

Anybody agree with me?

It was probably on a motor dyno and not in a car when they tested...and all accessories were probably removed for the runs.

Re: Ultimate LS1 Heads (apparently)

Those heads aren't that ultimate, my ported heads flow much better than that (346 @.600). And yes, that was probably an engine dyno rather than a chassis dyno.

Re: Ultimate LS1 Heads (apparently)

The number are on a motor dyno. The highest dyno I have seen yet with these heads is 480 rwhp and that was on the AFR shop car. I guess we all know how shop cars are..... From the results I have seen so far, the heads haven't held up to the expectations they were percieved to have. I've seen 2 real world dyno's and they were no where near AFR's numbers with bigger and better cams. I'm not downing the heads, but I'd let a few shops get them on some cars before I went a spent $2200 buck on them.

Re: Ultimate LS1 Heads (apparently)

TEA will be offering a killer set of AFR 205cc heads ported to their stage 3 for big inch ls1's...ported to a 238cc runner i believe, with AWESOME flow numbers #'s i saw the thread at ls1tech.
my uncle is putting these on his 02 ws6 with a 408" and T REX cam...
should be a bad ride when its together...

any body know anything else about TEA's stage 3 AFR's?

To start, they aren't AFR 205's. TEA gets them as bare casting with a "as cast" port of 170 cc's. They then run there "Judson" port on them. This is the same port that is run on LS-6/6.0 heads. The only thing that will be AFR about the heads, is the casting. The rest is all TEA. They make the port for strokers with bigger bores, or they have the same port shrunk .030" to fit stock bore LS-1's. You can get the same head in a LS-6 or 6.0 casting if you can't come across bare casting AFR's.

The only difference would be the thicker deck and other things that AFR casts into the heads. There's a lot more to heads than just the ports.
That being said I'd have to be pretty serious about spraying hard or big boost before spending the extra on AFRs when the TEA LS6/6.0 heads would flow the same.
