Tuning after headers?

Would there be any gains by getting a tune after a header install on a 99Z.

Thanks

air fuel ratio. any time you add a mod that affects it youll to tune your car to get maximum power out of it.

Adding LT headers will change your a/f ratio but you don't need tuning by a long stretch. I wouldn't spend the $400-$500 to get it dyno tuned until you do internal mods like cam, heads/cam, etc. If all you're ever going to do is headers then ok but it's not needed at all & seems like a waste to me on just a basic bolt on car.

Agreed...a tune won't hurt but it's definitely not necessary (90% of the time). If you're running really rich and are not planning any internal mods in the near future, then I'd say go ahead and get it tuned. If not, either don't get it tuned or wait until after you get the other mods done.

I have a question on this subject. My car seems to run well after LT install , and I have no tuning. Would it be helpful to run the Hypertech power tuning in the car ?? I have never run it, just use it to fix the speedo. I guess I would need to take the GMS maf off if I put the tuning in. ??

sorry to jump your topic.

I installed headers and off-road pipe and I started running waaaaaay rich.I went from 27mpg on road trips to 22mpg going to the same destination. Also, where are you guys getting your numbers? They only charge $300 to dyno tune with LS1 edit around here. Also, you can do more than just get a tune:
-Firm up shifts
-Remove EGR
-Adjust timing
-Adjust AFR
-Remove A.I.R.
-Remove the requirements for O2 sensors in the rear with no cats

00Hawk#140 don't use your hypertech to "tune" because it's junk & doesn't tune. If you need to recalibrate your speedo fine, but otherwise it's a waste.

nikkev you're a rare exception. After I got LT's my gas mileage went up. So in your case it was beneficial but for 90% + it's not until major mods are added. As far as price it all depends where you live but a $400-$500 dyno tune is pretty standard. It's a hell of a lot cheaper to live in SC than CA.

And we have no emissions laws either! The bad part is,I haven't got the tuning done yet. There is a guy coming down to a shop 1 hour away to do it over a weekend. So I have to wait for him to come down I think I am the only LS1 that I have heard of that slows down with mods

I have not tuned since I put my LT's on and everything seems fine. I did remove my Hypertech tuning though.

So, does deleting your cats and running 02 sims affect your AFR??? I plan on doing that mod this December and was hoping it's not going to do much other than get me 10 more hp & a funky exhaust smell.
