Trunk latch.. anyone fool with it?
Trunk latch.. anyone fool with it?
I have one thats manual and would like to get an electric one.. anyone here done this at all? If so how much labor is in this? is it possible? Do i need a different tumbler for the lock?
I put one on mine about 8 months ago. If I remember right the solenoid and switch was only about $18 off the net. I can't remember the company but I am off this weekend and can look for the install sheet on it. I usually file all these in a drawer. It does not require a different latch mechanism, it comes with a tiny rod attached to the solenoid that you bend in a hook to catch your existing latch. I looked at numerous ways to do this and finally came up with a real clean install by drilling a small hole in the latch arm(I think it was plastic) and bending the rod like this
----------\000000 (disregard the zeroes)
0000000000\--------
then inserting it in the hole to where the bend catches the arm. Hard to describe but I can send you a picture.
If I had it to do over again I would not have used the big pushbutton that comes with the kit. Its big because the solenoid does draw a fair amount of current. I am thinking of redoing it with a miniature pushbutton mounted on the small space next to the ashtray and use a relay to handle the current.
If you are interested in pursuing this feel free to send me an email reminder.

Found it. I used a model TR10 release kit from Commando Alarms.
888-754-2340. It was $19.99 last June.
Also, I was able to mount the bracket using an existing tailight assembly bolt so I didn't have to drill any holes in the car.
