Tranny gearing (Stay out you perverts!)
Tranny gearing (Stay out you perverts!)
Hey I was wondering about changing my final drive ratio. Now as I understand it, any number of changes can affect the final drive ratio. Is there any reason why I could not change the gearing in the transmission in the first 4 gears to mnake the final drive ratio equal to that of a 4.10 rear end, and keep the stock 5th and 6th gearing. That way I'm a bat out of hell in 1st thru 4th, and can still hit 160 and get 27 mpg on the hwy. Any thing wrong with this thinking? Thanks

well i dont have an auto or anything but from just seeing what goes on i dont think thats possible....well it is possible..nevrmind....basically dont do it...
and why doess it say stay out perverts
and why doess it say stay out perverts
If you can have custom gears made go for it... please tell me where they sell T56 custom gears. If not, your better off spending your money on like a sequential shifting Hewland tranny and a custom bellhousing.
if im not mistaken, by putting a larger/smaller overall diameter tire than stock would alter your gearing, as if you changed gears. for instance, vettes got 255/35?40?18's (or something like that in the rear), whereas fbods got 245/50/16 or 275/40/17 (i even forgot that one, duh!), both cars having t56's and 3.42's in the rear, the vettes rpm at 60mph is 1300 or so whereas the fbod iss is 1500. understand what i mean? from what i figure , the vettes 3.42s act like 3.23s or something would in an fbod cause the vettes wheel/tire combo is of a larger overall diameter.therefore, a vette shifts into 5th gear at a higher speed than an fbod does. if you were to put (for example) a 245/35/26 tire on the same rim on the fbod, it would lower your gear ratio (maybe act like 3.73s or something.??) anyway, point is, just change the gear in the rear
simplifies things a bit.

But!!!!!!!!! Close ratio gears are about a million times more effective that just the rear end gears.
1st gear 0-55mph
2nd gear 55-85mph
3rd gear 85-105mph
4th gear 105mph-120mph
etc. etc.
Much more effective that the stock T56 setup, plus dammnit, a big LS1 slammin through the gears sounds sweet, especially a close ratio gearbox behind an LS1.
Here's a few sounds of an LS1 behind a Hewland 5 speed... one straight away and downshifting, then one going by in a high speed turn going through the gears, and then one I got of the C5R when I was in the pits @ Sears Point, he stalls it then gets it going again, the damn thing sounds like thunder.

Larnach,
I have no idea where to get the gears. It was just something I started thinking about. I just wanted to know if it was a sound theory b4 I got into the money side of it. It could still have the same close ratios as stock until 5th gear with the new gearing. Each gear would be equally steeper.

Yeah, but first will go by so quickly with a 4.10 final drive ratio athat the other three gears are where I would save all that time. Plus there is also the whole effect of punching a downshift to second or third with a 4.10 ratio. That would be a big part of the fun.
