Torque Convertor ?

My 01 Z28 was purchased used and the guy had brand new tires on it with no more than 20 miles on them. Well my problem is I want to get a torque convertor, but the new tires are just regular Goodyear 235s. I was wondering if I get the torque convertor would it help at all if I wanted to put these tires through theyre useful life (with a convertor that wont last too long anyway) Or would the loss of traction actually hurt my 1/4 times. My car has ASR if that helps? Also would a higher gear ratio over my 2.73s be neccessary, and if I go with 4.10s with the convertor would that damage the drivetrain? I also read on another thread somewhere that a 3000 rpm stall feels like the car starts in 2nd gear. Well wouldnt that feel kinda slow? Or was the person who wrote that misinformed. Thanks for the help.

Thumbs up

A converter is a great first mod, but what kind (stall, STR, dia.) depends on what you want out of your car? I have been known to say "it feels like starting out in second" because I have a converter. I have a Vig3200, which I use in my daily driver (1000 miles/week). If you want great all around converter, the Vig's are great for this. If you want a great street converter, and for running from a roll ... you'd be hard pressed to beat the SY series from Yank. Or if you have major ***** ... go with the Yank Thruster Pro series (I am debating running one of these ). If you are $$$ conscience, then a TCI and Midwest offers great/competitive converters at half the price. Either way, those 235 ( ) will be way over worked for traction, except if you drive in sanely. 4.10 are over kill on an A4, better to use 3.73s. The 4.10 are more prone to breaking (since they have a smaller ring gear) then the 3.73s.

okay so you still didnt answer my ?. Does that start in 2nd feel mean it feels slower? I really know next to nothing about torque convertors so this may seem like a dumb ? to some people, but do these things cause my engine to idle at this speed at stoplights and such or do I have some kind of control, cause if it does idle at this speed then wouldnt this kill my fuel effeciency(as if it isnt already bad enough with my heavy foot)?

Your idle will be unaffected. The stall just means that when you floor it, the rpms will jump to that point as the car accelerates. Yes, it will feel like you are starting out in second (depending on the stall you choose). Your around-town fuel economy will suffer about 1-2 MPG. The car will feel like you are not fully letting the clutch out on a manual car. It will not really feel like the car is slower, just like the trans is going out. But when you hit the throttle you be hard pressed against your seat.
