even if you got 10rwhp out of it... which you don't...

Re: The Tornado & K&N, worth it?

No.. the lid did net me a solid 8-10 rwhp..
What I did also find was that the MTI LID($125 new) vs the Stealth LID($225 new)
performed the same.
So, the extra cost would be a waste.
If I were to run a lid, I would just get the cheapest one I could find (perhaps off a board member or ebay) then install it and be happy.. If you have a car with the AIR hose needing a small 1" filter, the local autozone always has them for $10.

tornado is useless. the air just gets straightened back out when passing through the carb/throttle body

We know you did'nt say you got 10 hp. But in reality if you gain 10hp in any way it is such a small difference that you cant feel the difference by the seat of the pants. I've read sevral times that on average, a car needs to gain close to 30hp to be able to accually feel a difference.

The thing of stock filter vs K&N on LS1's is that most LS1 owners do the free ram air mod which improves airflow to the airbox greatly but it picks up alot more dirt in the filter. And a filter only flows its best when its 100% clean. A stock filter will only flow well when its brand new and with the FRA it will only be like new for a very short time.So with a stock filter you'll have to buy a new one every couple of months.
I have'nt done the FRA mod yet to my car. I'll be doing it when I install my pacesetter LT's and Spec st3 clutch very soon. But I'll buy a K&N when I do the mod so I can just clean it on a regular basis.I would of bought the K&N when I bought my MTI lid but I read one of pyscocabbage's posts about this same subject over a year ago.I figured I would wait till I do the FRA mod.

i don't think so...

i did slp lid, filter, smooth bellows, cut all the rain baffles out of my hood, and did the FRA lower airbox thing... (to an extreme taken beyond normal) and i can't honestly say i "felt" anything...

only time i maybe felt something different... was when i removed my entire exhaust... which was prob good for 20 hp... and was A ****LOUD louder... and i think the sound had more to do with that than anything... cause when i put my exhaust on... drag times stayed pretty much the same... but it FELT a ****load slower... cause it was quiet

Thats what I've read from different publications. Did you you know that on average ,10 hp means aboout 1 tenth in the quater on the average street car? And a tenth of a second is about a carlenth differnce. So if a car picks up 10hp it will only gain around a tenth of a second or 1 car lenth in quater mile whichever way you want to look at it.A tenth or a carlenth is'nt much of a difference at all.So you telling me you can feel a carlenth difference?WOW, I could'nt feel a diffence in power when I installed my lid and borla catback run open. I noticed it sounded better though.

Re: The Tornado & K&N, worth it?

a lot depends on how much power you are starting with. 10hp will be much more noticable on a 250hp engine compared to a 500hp engine and so on...

Re: The Tornado & K&N, worth it?

K&N flat-panel filters are garbage and I have dyno proof similar to Psychocab's. However, the conical K&Ns seem to actually work. I also noticed sand was getting all the way up to my MAF with the K&N even after it was freshly washed/oiled. I am back to using Fram paper air filters.
