Re: Top Speed
I'm thinking if the car were low enough to the ground, with enough downforce, I could see the Fbody chassis doing 280. It's one of the most aerodynamic contemporary cars out there, and the top is very low, which is a plus.

Looks can be deceiving, there are many cars more aerodynamic than ours that by a glance look like there's no way in hell they could be aerodynamic at all. For instance: a honda accord has a drag coefficient of .30 in comparison. How about a VW Jetta also sitting at .30? That's almost as aerodynamic as a 'vette mind you. Hyundai Santa Fe (a frickin SUV) has a C/D of .34, same as our cars. A BMW 3 series .32, that's basically a cube on wheels. A FORD FOCUS set C/D records with mid .20's.
Don't believe me about flying off the road at high speeds? Search google for "CLK-GTR wreck" and I'm sure you'll see a vid of that car flipping up into the air once it hits a certain speed because the spoilers weren't calibrated correctly. At around 140 our cars become unstable and start lifting like a wing, hit anything higher without the proper equipment and you WILL come off the road and find yourself getting an up-close and personal look at a wall or tree at 160+ mph. Not a position I'd want to be in.

Re: Top Speed
Wider tires add to the drag cD. Our cars come with pretty wide tires and that slows us down.
I am not sure if the 92 Formula by Kugel/LaFevers still holds the top speed record for factory bodied car, but they set a record of 300mph with an exit speed of 308 I believe.
This was a 92 Formula with the 87-90 Spoiler installed since it is very functional.
On a side note, I had my old 86 Trans Am up to about 160mph and my car felt very stable at that speed.

W rated tires of what make? I wouldn't trust a budget w rated tire.
Not trying to troll here (I'd rather not read a post about how you lost control of your car), but your brake upgrades listed "drilled slotted rotors" are nothing but driveway jewelry. With the temps from high speeds, those pretty little drilled holes will develope some nice small cracks that will grow. Did you even upgrade your pads with something that could take higher temps?

Not really, actually the third gen cars ae more slippery. You dont see many 4th gens on the salt flats.
And if anyone thinks 450 rwhp in lowered f body is enough to run 195 mph NOT.....think 700 hp nascar, windtunnel massaged body here.

Re: Top Speed
first off... who cares.. your NUTS if you go 150+ on the streets... i did it once.. and still dont know why i did it... after being in my wreck(at 70mph) into a tree(off the interstate).... i doubt ill ever go over 100 anymore... just bc the car can go that fast... doesnt mean a pothole/dirty/blow out wont screw you just as hard...

Re: Top Speed
my car felt pretty stable 160+mph, i hate doing curves at that speed though. Dont wanna hit the brakes too hard and skid. Every bump is exaggerated but can still feel the gs while turning. A member on this site with head/cam lt1 was clocked at 183mph, he says could have gone faster with nitrous. I think with 400rwhp, 190+mph is attainable if the gearing is right.

Todd Carpenters old '96 Camaro has been clocked over 200 many times at various open road races. Dig around on google.
I drove my car in the BBORR a couple weeks ago. Averaged 125.264 over 118 miles, starting from a stop twice, and limited to a top speed of 140, I was clocked at 139 mph twice (car 125 in the 125 class).
My car is stable as a rock at 140 or 160.

Re: Top Speed
I missed that lol.
For the record, I do not advocate triple digit speeds on public streets. It is one thing to risk your own ***, but it is not ok for you to risk someone elses w/o their consent (passnegers lol).

Re: Top Speed
If you have ever looked under the back end of an F-body and seen the huge fricken parachute of a back bumper cover you would under stand why F-body's have a .34 drag coefficient. Along with the front air dam, to scoop up air for the radiator. Not to mention all the body seams and other areas where body panels stop or meet.
Also if they wanted to lower the drag coefficient they should have made the back hatch a more abrupt drop off. Like on the C5 Corvette, this way the air makes a cleaner brake from the vehicle and doesn't swirl around the back of the vehicle and create turbulence which causes drag.

Re: Top Speed
or another vehicle who gets smoked by somebody going too fast. According to the stats though, its not speed that kills (well it does, but usually its alcohol, and then mistakes at intersections).

Pushing past the 180mph barrier takes a lot of power.

Re: Top Speed
Going by the laws of physics, if he doubles his horsepower, his top speed should increase by a factor of the square root of 2, i.e approx 1.4
Ofcourse we need to factor in the internal friction losses which will be higher on the axle which will be rotating faster, and the rpm as well which may be higher, but at those speeds, the most significant factor is drag.
