Ticking AFTER Warm up.
Hey all!
New poster here, been browsing the boards here for a while though. You guys (and gals) are an infinite source of information.
Am the proud new owner of a 2002 Z28 (Check sig)
On to my dilemma.
The car is currently in storage. I start it up occaisonally, usually once every 2 weeks. The oil was changed about a month before I stored it, by the dealer I bought it off of. Not 100% positive, but I believe they put 10W30 in it. I drove it about 1000 KMS, with no abnormal noises that I heard.
The car seems to have developed a new ticking. Here's the catch: it only starts up after the car gets warmer. Off a completely cold start, it has what sounds like normal valvetrain chatter. (Mind you i'm no expert, but from descriptions and previous posts, a little valvetrain noise is expected.) I've recently discovered this new tick, but it happens AFTER the car warms up, close to operating temperature, coming somewhere from the passenger side. I've searched and read plenty about piston slap, and don't believe this is the tick. I'm stumped, and all of my mechanically inclined friends are as well. I've never mis-shifted it myself, but it is quite possible the previous owner did. I've bounced off the rev limiter a few times myself.. (damn slow tach..
). Not sure if that did anything or not. Whats your opinion?
Thanks in advance
Nick

Are you sure it may not be just the valvetrain / lifter noise?
My engine has been pretty noisy ever since day one
, and while the piston slap is most noticable when the engine is cold, I can still hear a "clattery" sound when the engine is hot, and it sounds exactly like rockers / lifters do when you're adjusting them on hydraulic lifter setups. Unless it's a totally DIFFERENT noise than the usual lifter noise, then I'm stumped!
How many K's are on the car?
Unless at some point the engine DID over-rev enough to bend a pushrod and cause some extra play in the valvetrain somewhere, I'd like to think that the engine isn't making any more than "normal" noise already, since it's still only a 2002
.
BTW, where in Ontario are you? There are quite a few guys on here from Ontario actually
...........a lot from Windsor area I think, and I actually know a couple around here in Oshawa!

AIR check valves can make a ticking/fluttering sound when they go, but you'd be throwing a SES if that were the problem.
Can you clarify a little more? Try and pinpoint the location a little better, loud or faint, constant?

Thanks for replies all
forgot to mention car has 9000 KMS on it right now
No SES light at all, the sound isn't loud or quiet.. just a solid, constant tick coming from the passenger side, and I can hear it standing in front of the car with the hood closed. Not a clattery sound either, it is a solid "tick"
I'm hoping it's just normal valvetrain noise.

mine is really bad tapping, since day one got louder with my LT's then when i install the cam even louder? some say that the headers aren't as thick as exhaust manifolds so you hear the noise of the valve train more? but i can hear mine pretty lound just driving around town under 40 or so.

.....yeah, I dont know anybody that buys that excuse, even GM mechs. Chances are that yes it is piston slap, as long as its a light tapping, not violent knocking or anything like that.
Valve noise/Piston slap?

Piston slap is not very rare when it comes to LS1's. These engines were plagued with it, and GM should have given everybody new motors, but they like to tell everybody its not a problem, its just part of the design

I just bought a 2002 Z28 with 20,140 miles on it a few weeks ago. And when I first start the car in the morning the valves are very loud. But once the car warms up the clicking/chatter sound decreases by about 80% But is still fairly loud, still loud enough to make me concerned. It "seems" it may only be coming form the drivers side and seems to have a slight rattle sound along with the clicking/chatter sound. Also it is not as loud when it is in park. But when I put it in drive it gets louder. But now after reading in this forum and hearing about piston slap I am even more concerned.
So I was hoping if anyone has any info on this problem and what was done to fix it can help me out. I plan on taking it to the dealer next week and see what they have to say.

First of all it might just be the fuel injectors. They tick as they pulse when delivering fuel. Mine do it, it is just a slight tick when the car warms up. Sound is exactly what this guy is talking about.
Also i feel that the piston slap is not gm's fault. I believe that it is the owners of the cars problem. The reason being is these cars need to be perfectly warm before driven. I have owned three GM cars(1999 TA WS6, 2001 Camaro SS, and a 2000 TA WS6) and i have never had a problem with piston slap. I think it is people thinking they can beat the living **** out of their car when that is not what it was made for. Now the 2001 SS i had has seen it good share of redline and burnouts but i broke the motor in up to 1000 miles and made sure the car was perfectly warm before beating on it. Im not saying its all the owners but i mean the whole bad batch of pistons is bs. I mean i have had at least three years to have this happen and it still hasnt. Everybody says its a common problem. I think it sounds common because the people bitching about it is more noticable than the people like me that sit back and say nothing. Sorry to get off subject but i hear people whine about this piston slap including my friend but when i see him get in his car he drives off in a burnout. Now why do u think his motor is slapping? Flame if you want to but i just havent had this happen to any of my cars and it probably wont.

Well I haven't done one burnout since I got my Z28. It still has the factory tires and the rear tires look as good as new and still have those little rubber hairs on them. I know what tires look like after you do burnouts on them and they don't look burnout worn. I got an 88 Camaro that I've drove the hell out of. And it never has had an engine problem in 177,000 miles. And it even runs more quite than my 02 z28 LS1 !!! I'll just hope for the best out of my car and ask the dealer what he thinks of the noise. Anyways thanks for the reply. When I find out something I will post it here in the form.
If anyone else has any thoughts on this please post. Thanks

Oh boy
All i was saying is i pretty sure i know the noise your talking about because my car makes the same noise. Mine comes from the fuel injectors and it gets louder as the car warms up. so i was thinking that might be your noise.
Oh and i just sold a 1989 Camaro Iroc-z that had 38,000 original miles on the 350 tpi and while it may not of had problems it had just as much noise. All motors have noises.
