Those with black dashes in their Firebirds????

I bought a used black Firebird dash which I think is supposed to be a 2001. For those of you that have the black dashes did yours look like they were spray painted black?

What got me wandering was there a couple nice cracks in the dash plastic that sort of creased the vinyl crap the dash is made out of and the black paint bubbled and flacked off and there I saw dark gray underneath that.

when I opened up the box today, I noticed that places like where the radio trim goes and guage cover thing underneath where they would sit, were dark gray with a little black overspray. Also in places like the sides of the dash you see when you open your door, it looks like it had been sprayed with a lite coat of black paint that when looked at from a distance appears black but when you get a closer look you can see dark gray specs that weren't covered like somoeone was just trying to blend the colors together. Another place is where your right knee might hit the dash on the side of the radio pad area appears to be dark gray. Looks like someones knee might have worn the black away. Also the vents themselves appear to be a very dark gray and if taken out, the opening they fit into in the dash has black overspay in there too.

Now the top of the dash appears to be more of a solid black color. The grain of the vinyl looks fine and not filled in from some crappy spray job. The paint is also kind of flexible unlike spray paint i ever used.

So what I am trying to find out is are any of your dashes like this? Did Gm when switching over to the black dashes, simply paint the old dark gray ones? Or did I get screwed and get someones attempt at a black dash?

Sorry to say it sounds like you got screwed Sounds like the dash was faded from the sun, and they tried to paint it in order to hide it, and since they couldn't find an exact color match for the grey, they went for black.

Thanks guys. I think I have it taken care of. I bought this dash from Speedautomotive.com. I called them a day or two after I wrote this and they told me the dashes are supposedly made in dark gray and later sprayed black if you chose that option. And apparently they did the same with all the dash trim peaces too.

Anyway I don't have the dash right now. Since it was damaged when I got it, I talked with speedautomotive and we filed a claim with ups. I had to strip it of all the pieces and ups took the shell and im supposed to be getting another.

another thing, let me just say this Firebird dash is being fitted into my '87 Iroc so i don't know too much about 4th gen interiors. I ordered a complete Black (ebony) Firebird dash and console which i believe were available in only the 2000-2002 'Birds.
I haven't recieved my console yet.

Anyway I was just looking at some pics of dashes. In looking at the area where the console meets the dash, Which bracket am I supposed to have if Im getting a 2001 firebird dash the one in the first or second pic? The dash I had had a bracket that looked like the second pic, but after seeing some other dash pics of 98+ cars they had the silver bracket like the first pic. Was is that silver bracket for?
