There's parakeets under my hood!

I can't get rid of this chirping coming from th engine. I've replaced the belts, used belt dressing (which made it worse) and nothing seems to get rid of it very long.

The new belt helped for a little bit, maybe a 1000 miles or so, but then it came back. It's pretty embarrasing...

The belt dressing made a horrid squishy sound though it did get rid of the parakeets momentarily

Anyone else have this problem or any thoughts on it?

Maybe it's a bearing on something in there?

If a new belt fixed it for awhile, make sure no oil or coolant is getting on the belt. If nothing else the belt should be under warranty so get another. Or try a small amout of oil or wd-40. Make sure all your pulleys are lined up and bearings good too.

Hey Timber,
There is a TSB out on the 99-00s for this problem. It's a misalignmemt problem. It is corrected by replacing the tensioner and bracket I think.

Belt tensioner. Like $50 and about 15 minutes total. While you have the belt off, just spin everything else to make sure no bearings are shot...

My car has this problem too. Where do I get one of these tensioners?

definitely the tensioner, Mine did that too, and it went away, they are costly but worth it. you can go to the dealership to get them. easy bolt on. Now the squeeking is back again, but i know its just goign to be a bad belt.

You can check the belt by taking it off and pushing an end together too see if there are cracks, because those cracks are what makes the noise in the belts,

BTW: i heard peanut butter works for belts, just a thought.

There is a TSB for the tensioner and a mis-aligned alternator bracket pulley. Find the EXACT source of the noise and go from their. If you replace any component in the serpentine system, replace the belt. I had the bracket pulley replaced a few years ago. Good since then. WD-40 is a very short term fix AND is a good way to collect dust in the bearing.

it is most likely the tensioners, same thing happened to my 98 Z28 too, on 2 different occasions. There are actually 2 different tensioners, one at the top and one at the bottom.

It is the top tensioner. GM part. (ie go to the overpriced dealer). I called around and got "I don't think you can replace them" and that type of answer from Discount and AZ.

I had the same problem in my 99 camaro and replaced the belt with a goodyear gatorback belt and got rid of the birds but now it sounds just like i have a supercharger. I've even had people at gas stations asking me how much boost i was running . Any of you guys run into this problem?
