SS exhaust question...

What's up guys, My friend just bought a 99 SS 6spd, sweet car compared to my lt1, seems so much more fun to drive and so much more responsive, well that's besides the point. I got underneath the car today and looked at the exhaust because it has a magnaflow muffler and i was curious as to see if it was a whole catback, well i kinda got under there and followed the pipe back to the cat and was stunned at what i saw, it looked like the pipe from the cat back was flat to the point were it reached the rear end, it was really weird, it didn't look like it was flattened out in an accident or something, it looked like it was just flat pipe instead of a circular round piping. I don't know if its some sort of resonator or something but it was definitely weird and looked really restrictive...had no clue if it was stock or not, hope someone knew what the heck that was, well Thanks for reading, hope to figure out what the heck it was meant to do.

The only pipe that is flat like that would be the stock Y-pipe. I know when I put in my magnaflow this past sunday I checked out the Y-pipe and noticed is was pretty flat. From what I read on the board changing to the slp or other aftermarket Y pipe wouldn't really help performance (although a few people have said they noticed somthing). I'm just going to wait until I get enough money for long tubes to worry about that.

I've got a 2002 M6 SS - and I've got that flat tubing you see as well. It was pretty mind boggling seeing it at first, but if you try to imagine a round tubing there, you'll realize they flattened it for a reason. It would certainly rub the ground on speed bumps, whereas the flattened one gives you a bit more ground clearance.

so it is a stick piece, you are right it is mind boggling, i didnt know what to think besides the fact that it might be really restrictive, i guess we'll change it soon and find out if it really does help, thanks for your replies guys.
