SLP Y-pipe installed.....but got Q's
SLP Y-pipe installed.....but got Q's
I got the y pipe installed yesterday and now i hear some nasty rattle coming form underneath, I think its the black cross plate that suppose to suport the y and the exhaust. Im thinking of just taking that plate off, is it safe? Does anybody know what causing it to rattle? Anybody came across the same prob.???
First, make sure the Y-pipe isn't touching the floorboard. Unless you have longtubes, it's most likely the Y-pipe/catback hitting the crossmember brace that you're talking about. It's safe to trim it, but I wouldn't remove it on a daily driven car because it helps with chassis rigidity.
If it is the black piece you can take it off and bend it a little to get the clearance around the y you need. That is what I had to do on mine. Another thing you might want to check is on the drivers side of the y there is a brace in the floor pan that the y pipe could be very close to and hitting when the motor torques. If it only rattles under heavy acceleration its probably the pipe hitting under the drivers seat.

Mine has has a tinny rattle ever since I installed my loudmouth. I've looked several times but I can't narrow down what the problem is.

i had a similar problem with my bassani orp
look at this picture for a pic of where mine was hitting.
i cured it with poly motor mounts, since i was getting headers soon anyway.
and for the black plate you can also put spacers to lower it a little to prevent banging.

that flat thin stamped piece of junk helps rigidity? pfft
take it off and you can bend it with your own two hands ...
i took it off on my old LT1 and ran for prolly 8 months without any noticable difference. if your really worried about it then put some washers between it and the car to space it out a bit.
the only thing i think its really designed to do is catch the driveshaft should it come flying off.

the mounts would be EASY to do with the manifolds out of the way....
i wish i had waited till i did my headers....the mounts took nearly 12 hours to do....longer than the header install took
