Is the SLP MAF worth it? Or MAF ends worth it?
Just wondering if the MAF is worth it or if the MAF ends would be enough. What are the gains from either? this will be on a 2001 WS6 with a Throttle body and Lid. Thanks
What's the SLP MAF worth? HA! I wouldn't put it on my car if someone gave it to me. That's how bad it is. The MSF ends are a little better, but I wouldn't get those either. They have a chance of throwing a code.
It works for some .but not all. The MAF upgrades not worth it on a car under 400HP wont add squat. Porting and descreening might add 2 - 6 HP but again nothing you would notice. That being said I have it all done to my car and only difference Ive noticed is better gas milage. Some cars with M6s dont have a problem some run too rich. If I had a A4 I wouldnt even consider these mods, due to line preassure changes
i've had the maf ends on my car for 3 years, 2 on my 96 and the rest on my new 99...
have yet to throw a code or have any problems...
couldn't tell you if i gained anything...tough to tell without a dyno.
nice thing is you can always go back to stock if you get the ends or the new maf.
i did run a ZO6 coversion on my 96 for a month and seemed to pick up some topend.

In my opinion... any aftermarket MAF is a waste of money, unless you're going to a larger diameter. Replacing a stock MAF with one the same size is pointless. I ported and polished my MAF for about 11 bucks... much cheaper than any aftermarket out there, and the results are the same. The main reason SLP or Granatelli sell MAFs are because people will buy them. If you check out some of the shops that rebuild or enhance LS1 engines, they usually keep the MAF stock... just not a huge gain from it. BTW... I've got a '02 with an A4 and porting the MAF has caused no SES lights, fuel delivery problems, or any other problems whatsoever. One side benefit of porting it yourself is the satisfaction of doing something well and saving money in the process.
The MAF is a calibrated measuring device. By screwing with it in any way shape or form, you are simply mis calibrating it.
On some cars it seems to provide a benifit, on some cars nothing and on others it's detrimental ...

Yes it is a measuring device. And yes you run the risk of detrimental changes. You can kinda think of it as a cheap way of retuning your computer, because you are tricking the MAF by making changes to it. I'm going to check to make sure I'm not getting knock, if not then it is a small gain. I wouldn't consider it worth it compared to almost any other mod you could do for power.

Y2kPewterSSIm 1 of those who has benefited from ported ends and descreening. Some dont, but I did. As for knocking I dont have to tell you . Just floor it getting on the Hiway. If you hear marbles its cheap gas or the MAF. Eighter way give it at least 100 miles for the computer to relearn what the MAFs telling it. Contrary to a certains sponsors claim that the computer resets itself to default status after 200 miles, which it doesnt. Save your $$ and stay with the stock MAF. I cant say for sure what that Certain sponser does to their MAF to recalibrate it and get big $$$ . The less exspensive 150 ish $$$ sponsers MAF, just has a 50cent resistor added to it .
I bought the SLP MAF and Smooth Bellows but haven't installed them yet. After reading this maybe I should sell them and put the money towards some real mods. ie; heads, cam and headers. Oh-well, anyone wanna buy my new ones?
