SLP Long Tubes?
SLP Long Tubes?
I am considering purchasing a set of SLP long tube headers with my 2800 stall. With the mods I have in my sig what kinds of gains can I expect with these headers? Also, what does a typical installation usually run? Finally, I am running a Borla full cat on the wide open setting. With my 3.73's highway cruising is pretty loud. How much worse will it get with the long tubes? Thanks!
Without a cam you might only see 15rwhp from the headers. It will be much louder higher in the RPMs. My buddies Firehawk has them and it sounds pretty good at idle, but SCREAMS when the RMPs go past 3k. As far as installation, I'm not sure, but it should be at least $500, maybe $800. Hope this helps...
IMO, I would look elsewhere for LTs. I'm sure the SLPs are ok but from everything I've seen/read, they don't perform quite as well as most of the other LTs. To boot, they're a PITA to install (compared to some of the others) and the ground clearance isn't very good, not real bad...but not good.
*I can tell you that my QTPs went in very easy, I can't imagine a LT install being any easier honestly...performance gain, I'm not sure yet, hopefully I'll make it up to Moroso sometime soon, even though the weather sucks right now. Ground clearance isn't too bad either, the lowest part is my y-pipe but I had that custom made and he (the guy who made the Y) definitely could have put it closer to the floorboard, I've got like a 2+" gap between the Y and the floorboard so ground clearance could be even better than it is right now.
Back to topic, how loud it's going to be depends a lot on whether you're going to run cats or not. My '96 with Hooker LTs, ORY (no cats) and Borla "cat"back was very loud. It wasn't too bad just cruising on the highway (2000 rpms or so) but @ WOT: LOUD. I really didn't mind it though (actually kinda liked it) but you might, I dunno.
Install price? At a shop, it'll probably run you about $400 or so. If you don't want to pay that much, let me know and I'll see if my friend is up for another header install. He's good, trust me. Let me know with enough time and we could probably get access to one of the lifts over at Spanish River HS...that would make the job a lot easier and probably save at least an hour and a half.

You can usually expect between 20-25hp gain with a stock or mildly modified car. One tip that makes the install much easier is to carefully loosen the bolts that hold the engine cradle up. This will allow it to come down alittle (about 1/2") and give you enough room to slide the headers in. Installation cost will be different between shops. We get $400. for a long tube installation.

tightennng headers
hey guys i have a ? my dad and his friends are tellin me if i get headers its gonna b a bitch because i'm gunna have to get under the car every two weeks and tighten the headers. They all had old muscle cars mostly chevelles does this still exist where i would have to go under the car and tighten the headers in order not to blow exhaust guaskets?
Ok so apparently SLP longtubes arent the easiest to install. Would the FLP's be a better choice just for this reason? Why are the FLP's more expensive than the SLP's? Also, are headers even necessary at this point or would my mod money be spent better elsewhere?
FLP's are a better choice period. They tuck up very well & are easy to install. The reason they are more expensive is that they come with everything. Headers, y-pipe, race pipes, cats, & install kit. They are a complete kit. You can find used ones for cheaper.

), anyway, you just need to install the headers and after about a week tighten all the nuts again because they will loosen after a few heat cycles. I have never had a problem with them since the install about 2 months ago.
