shorty headers
The question should read, "what is the difference between shorty headers and stock manifolds, perfmance wise." Our stock manifold are cast iron shorties for the most part.
There is barely any gain by going to a shorty header. Long tubes will show 15-30 hp over a shorty, depending of course on the header, and other mods; cam, heads, etc.

You only see a 5-10 hp gain on 98-99 models. 00-02 sell little if any. But you do get a CARB# to pass emmisions if you need to. LT's are usually 15-25hp (depending on mods) over shorties but have no CARB#. I have a set of 98-99 shorties for sale. PM if interested.
Shorty Heads are good for those of us who have to pass emmisions and have buckets of money. For a 5-10 hp gain, to spend 600-700 dollars you have to really some money. The only other reason why I would do that is that getting Headers of any type will make the car louder. I personally like that.
I just have no idea how much sound difference there is to a car with LT vs a car with shorties.

, with cats though
i've said this before but i'll say it again. i called jba and they told me 12 hp (probably at the flywheel) 8-10 in my opinion. however longtubes usually include y pipe plus high flow cats. YOU GUYS ARE NOT MAKING A FAIR COMPARISON in my opinion. i called random tech and they claim 9 hp with their high flow cats and y-pipe for $550. thats a total of 17 hp legal vs 25 with long tubes. tpi secialties told me i'd gain 20hp w longtubes and catco cats,y-pipe. call these people if you don't believe me! who out there has actually dynoed the difference with no variables?
even if u put cats on long tubes they arent carb legal and moving the cat comes with a penalty ($$$). If you ever race on the street (or anywhere thats not the track) and you get caught, they will pop you for this

well said
i would be willing to bet that an identical car, with shorties and an orp would gain probably 15hp. where longtubes and the associated orp would gain 20hp
the problem is that most shorties are installed on stock ypipes...which can be restrictive.
i would say if you are or plan to run heads/cam or a SC...go LT

Well... it makes NO sense to buy shorty headers and an ORY. The only reason anyone gets shorties is to NOT move the cats, this meaning you will still have cats... Very few cops will give you the big fine, most will just have you the fix-it ticket meaning you will have to take your car to the smog shop with all the stock stuff back on. After that, put your LT's back on... If you get MAC's they can't even see them, but they will see the cats and you will be fine. LT's are a bit more risky, but as long as you have cats, you should be fine, no guarantees though...
