roller rockers

Hey I'm getting a good deal on some harland rockers, Everyone says stick with stock, but are there any advantages in the aftermarket rollers? (staying with stock ratio)

Re: roller rockers

first thing that comes to mind is a reduced chance of the needle bearing failure that has happened to some stock rockers. although i've only heard this a few times, so i don't think it's a big issue anymore.

my hs rockers weighed less than the stockers so i would think that would help performance a little bit. although someone told me that they are heavier over the valve which is a downfall. but i have not substantiated that.

looking at the contact patch of the valve stem on the rocker, i would think the roller tip would reduce friction a fair amount. especially with a higher lift cam. so i think the advantage is positive there.

did i notice anything when i installed mine? NOPE

but in all honesty...i wasn't expecting more than 5hp.

but i got them brand new in the box...for MUCH less than new cost...so i'm happy

Re: roller rockers

Benefits of aftermarket rockers with the same 1.7 ratio don't really focus on added power, but more on added reliability - especially when you start raising the rev limiter in cam'd applications. Reduced friction will help a little, but no more than a coolant bypass mod if you ask me. I think I remember reading something about the full roller, shaft-mounted rockers keep better geometry (no twisting the valve stem). That and as teke said, there have been some instances of stock rocker failure. None that I've seen personally, but hearsay on multiple occasions. Truth is, unless you're going with a more aggressive cam/valvetrain, the stockers should be just fine. So, save your money for something else....like an underdrive pulley. That'll get you the proven 10hp you're looking for.

Re: roller rockers

There are amny 11 ans 10 sec rides still running the stock rockers. The only advantage I see is lightening your wallet.

Re: roller rockers

i agree with SSpdDmon

on stock cam or small cam lift cam...stock will be fine

if you're going with a more aggressive cam...i think there are some benefits. not alot...but some.

as for the deal with the shaft mounted and less twist, that's why i went with the Harland Sharps (beyond the fact they were a steal)...they're shaft mounted between the intake and exhaust rocker. so geometry is maintained alot better.

the bottom line is that there are alot of high pwer cars out there getting away with stock components like rockers. is it a bad thing...not really. is there some benefit to upgrading...yes.

Re: roller rockers

Well you know I'm not going to be stock for long. I'm counting down the days untill my F13 arrives at the door.. I think 150 bucks for just broken in rockers isnt bad, And with the lift and duration i'm going with, I think i'll get them just for that very slight upgrade in reliability.

Re: roller rockers

Well, If I could get a group of people to donate for a dyno run I'd go for it!

Stock rockers are fine for all but the most extreme applications...

Re: roller rockers

For $150 I say go for it.. that is a great price and as the others have said look at it as a reliability thing. Good luck!

Re: roller rockers

I am the guy that GR has been in contact with on the HS rockers, everything I have read in this thread is legit/correct,stock rockers are great/HS are added security as far as dropping needle bearings etc. My 02 ss is a 20K car that has never seen rain,I am having a 427 built for it and the builder has his own valve train set up although I wanted to use the HS. But he has a warranty as long as I use his setup thats why I am offering this deal.
